I'd be willing to guess that Nintendo branded phat batteries are made in China.

(added) In fact, I checked. Nintendo branded original batteries ARE made in China.

I would be concerned about buying a battery from Hong Kong. Their safety standards are lax. Who knows, a cheap battery could catch on fire while it's charging. Just because it's all made in China no matter where you buy it from doesn't mean that they all have the same safety regulations. Anything that is for sale in North America, Europe, Japan, Australia, etc. has to go through more rigorous safety tests than in China/Hong Kong.

I take it that Nintendo doesn't sell the original battery anymore? That's just like Nintendo. Not selling old accessories to force you to buy a new console handheld (DS Lite or DSi).

At the very least buy the battery from a reputable domestic source that past local safety tests and regulations so that you know it won't blow up one day while it's in the charger. DealExtreme has lots of cool stuff, including flash carts on the cheap, but I wouldn't buy anything that could be a potential fire hazard (ie. chargers and batteries for charging) from there.

I agree with your comment about chargers, having several from both eBay and dealextreme I can say they are very poor - in fact some are dangerous. The cables on a PSP charger were so thin - 3 strands, it got warm when pluged in - thats the cable not the charger.

The battery is a problem as they are now only available in limited places, if you pay a bit more and get it from a store in your country you will have comeback if anything happens - however it will probably be the same battery sold by the HK sellers.
