my sony dru-14a (flashed to 510a) seems to be having problems with newer media, specifically rited 16x discs. I'm wondering if it's because it's so old that newer media just isn't compatible? now it burns some fake TY dics it wouldn't burn before, but they don't play in a dvd player.... says "check disc, unreadable" or something, maybe it's going out. I ordered a Pioneer DVR-111D as a replacement just in case, wondering if i should throw it (sony) in the trash or what.

You might as well use your sony as a dvd-rom drive. You have more than one drive bay don't you. You can also use it for ripping (if it's not too slow) to save wear and tear on your new drive.

good idea.... it reads fine, maybe using different brands of media all the time messed with it's head.
