I need some help overclocking my amd 5400+ Black edtion 2.8ghz...
    BIOSTAR A740G
    400W corsair PSU
    2 gb ddr2 Ram 800
    sapphire 4830
    120 gb hd
    freezer 64
what settings should I use? I was thinking keeping the multiplier at 14x and setting the mz to 228 making it about 3.2ghz without changing the voltage. would that be stable or should I change the multiplier or voltage?

Only one way to find out, but I highly doubt it. AM2 dual cores don't overclock too well.

    Isn't the 6000+ 3.1Ghz stock?

i dont think it is, not sure, because when i went to check my settings in the bios i noticed it was all back at defaults and it was running at 2.6 (stupid bios updates). but now i have it back up to 3.15 or something like that.

2.6 is definitely not stock for a 6000+, that's presumably an error.

yea, it was an error on my side, i have the 5000+ BE. but it is OCed to 3.1 though, the multiplier is set on 14 i believe and the mz is around 220 i think is what i said, but i upped the voltage just a tad.

Right, that makes more sense. 3.1Ghz or so isn't usually too difficult to achieve with AMDs as they're almost all the same chip but put at different starting multipliers, and since Black editions let you raise the multiplier you can always get that far. Going beyond 3.1Ghz however is tricky and does require more voltage.

yea i think when i first got the thing i had it to like 3.23 or so, but it wasnt very stable, but 3.1 is plenty fast enough for what i do on my comp.

using the same fan that you are, and i posted my settings about umm....4 posts above this one. if i have time before i have to go to work tomorrow ill reboot and make sure of what my settings are, but those are right around it. as for the voltage, i increased it by one setting. (.04, or .4 something like that, whatever my first choice is).

normal temp is around 28-31 (i keep my room around 60-65 most of the time), if im converting a movie or something that is actually using the cpu then its around 45 or so.

im just going by the temp that it displays when its minimized down by the clock. when i open it up i have like 8 other temps due to the 6 HDs being used in my comp.

I just tried to get 3.2 by 12*266 and 1.375v but it wasnt very stable. failed prime95 in 30 seconds. I havent tried 16*200 but I doubt thatll work. I understand that I might need 1.4v for 3.2ghz but my mobo stops at 1.375v... I see the option to cpu overvolt, memory overvolt and start up(+.10v,20v,or 30v) but I have no idea what that means.
    im using a BIOSTAR A740G

Edit: after 2 hours on athros the test failed... 3.1hz with 1.375v wasnt even stable... why?
Do you need to finish the full test to be considered stable?
I could also use some help on Ht links... mines is at auto

Yes, that early and the system probably isn't stable. Have you set the HTT to 4x?
