Well at the moment i currently have my tv hooked to my pc via a vga cable which comes from my dvi-vga adaptor on my gfx card to the pc slot on my tv..the max res i can make the display go is 1360 x 768 in nvidia cp now what i was wondering is if i got a dvi to hdmi cable that hooked straight in to my pc graphics card and to the hdmi port on my tv would i get the 1080i resolution? my tv is 720p/1080i and if so..would 1080p footage played from my pc, display at 1920x800 on my tv? or because my tv doesnt support 1080p would it display wierd or even at all?
my tv is 720p/1080i This only tells us your TV can process and display 720p and 1080i signals. It likely can also display 480i and 480p. What we need to know is the native display resolution, likely either 720p or 1080i. That's the resolution that your TV actually uses. All others are scaled to that resolution. I suspect your set is native 720p which is why the highest resolution you've been able to achieve is 1360 x 768. The VGA connection gives you a 1:1 bitmapping. The DVI connection won't enable any higher resolution. Whether your TV can accept and rescale 1080p, I can't answer. There is no way to display a true 1080p signal/picture on a 720p or 1080i set though. It would have to be downscaled to the native resolution to be displayed. If the specs for the TV do not list 1080p, it is possible it won't be able to downscale the signal. The only way to know for sure is to try and see.
i see..cheers for the feedback man well yeah my tv's native res is 720p..i tought i could get the dvi-hdmi to enable higher 1080i res..maybe not in progressive but in interlaced i watched some 1920x1080 footage yesterday on it but didnt seem to be displayed in 1080 but 1360 x 768..the footage had a res of 1080 but think my telly was turning it down to 720 as thats the highest its set to through nvidia.. i also have a ps3 hooked up to the tv with hdmi cable and casino royale played back on it in 1080i and looked alot better than the footage i watched from my pc which was supposidly the same res but just wasnt displayed like it as my tv wouldnt go any higher with the vga.. so i still wont be able to get the 1080i res using dvi-hdmi? thanks for the help again
Whatever TV signal you receive, 1080i or 720p, your TV's scaler will rescale to 1360 x 768, its native resolution. Using DVI or VGA from a PC video card you can get other resolutions, but they cannot exceed 1360 x 768, your TV's max resolution. With lesser resolutions you'll see black borders around your picture.
