philips dvd+rw drive won't recognize any cds only dvds

    Hi
    Have a Philips dvd+rw 8601 which worked merrily with dvds & cds until kids decided to install some games last week. Drive now only recognizes dvds & not cds. I can't use XP restore. Properties in device manager indicate device is working properly. Driver appears to be most current. I checked cables & they all appear OK . Any suggestions on what to try next greatly appreciated !

    Did you solve the problem. For me exactly the same happened. Installed some new programs - and suddenly no burningtools are working. I suspect some kind og aspi problems but i am not sure

    Still no go skott. I took the easy way out, bought an old el-cheapo external usb cd-burner.
