i recently have been reading your info on this drive and i have this drive and i am using Nero to try and back up my hard drive. i have used this and been successful in the past but not today. my computer is out of warranty so i won't be able to get a new drive. the drive comes up with only being able to be an image writer and won't write to the disk. any ideas?

I would have drop-kicked that troublesome drive a long time ago. Get a BenQ, Plextor, or Pioneer drive.

You undoubtedly read the "never ending thread" on the drive. New burners are inexpensive, but it is up to you to do what you want to be up and running again.

i would just plump for a nice and cheap Benq DW1650, or a DW1655 if you wanted the lightscribe version of the same drive.

edit- and yup, the epic thread for the jinxed or just plain atrocious Philips DVD8631 burner is here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/179003
