I see there is a long forum for the DVP642 (DVP630 Europe) but nothing for the new DVP5100 player, so I'd start a thread...

Anyway this is an excellent player, playing many formats and Philips claim it supports GMC and QPEL in DivX, although I have not tested.

Anyway I have a couple of issue with the firmware in this player, I am using the UK model 5100/05.

    16:9 switching problem
The 5100 sends widescreen MPEG 4 to my TV anamorpically, which is good, but the player DOES NOT activate the widescreen mode via the SCART cable, so I have to set the wide mode on my TV manually.

I note that DVDs DO active the widescreen mode through the SCART cable correctly.

4:3 display problem with the DVP5100
I have tested some 4:3 Mpeg 4s and they are also output anamorphically, which means you cannot stretch to full screen, as you are left with black borders left and right.

And again my normal and very important DVD-player question:
Can this player play mp3's random through subdirectories?

RTFM... you can find it at philips site by searching with dvp5100. Anyway, here's the interesting page copy-pasted:

    IMPORTANT!
You have to turn on your TV and set to
the correct Video In channel. (See page
    15 “Setting up the TV”).
    General Operation

➜The disc reading time may exceed 30
seconds due to the complexity of the

To select another folder from the current
disc, press 1 to return to the root menu,
then press 3 4 to make your selection
    and press OK to confirm.
    During playback, you can;
     Press S / T to select another track/
    file in the current folder.
     Press REPEAT continuously to access
    different ‘Play Mode’.
➜FOLDER: files will be played back once.
➜REPEAT ONE: one file being played
    repeatedly.
➜REPEAT FOLDER: all files in one folder
    being played repeatedly.
➜SHUFFLE: all files in the current folder
    being played at random order.
➜SINGLE: play the selected file once,
    then return to the menu.
     Press Å to pause playback.
    Helpful Hints:
    – It may not be possible to play certain
    MP3/Windows Media™ Audio/JPEG/DivX/
MPEG-4 disc due to the configuration and
characteristics of the disc or condition of the
    recording.
    – It is normal to experience an occasional
“skip” while listening to your MP3/Windows
    Media™ Audiodisc.
    – It is normal to experience an occasional
    pixelation during MPEG-4/DivX playback
due to poor clarity of digital contents during
    internet downloading.
    – For multi-session discs with different
formats, only the first session will be available.
    ********************************

So the question remains whether this can handle multiple folders or not:
➜SHUFFLE: all files in the current folder
    being played at random order.

    mrzippy, can you try out?

Finally i bought this player and works perfectly. But i've this question...

Playing mp3: There is a way to use a display with a smaller font? Because it only shows the 1st letters of the track, album and artis.

    Thanks...

I don't think the player supports long filenames, it does this with divx too.
