this is really doing my head in!
without getting technical, i am having extreme trouble playing any of my xvid avi files on the philips dvp630/05.
is there anythink i can do apart from converting the files to divx or mpeg, as the reason i bought the player was primarily so i didn't have to convert anything.
i have installed the latest firmware from philips, to no avail.
the following is an examle of what i can not play:

    audio
    audio format mpeg layer 3
    average data 16.170 kb/s
    sample rate 48.00 khz
    channels 2

    video
    frame width 576 pixels
    frame height 240 pixels
    frame rate 25.00 frames/second
    data rate 112.47 kb/s
    video sample 12 bit
    video compression xvid.

    Hi all,
I have just purchased the DVp630 and have been trying it out with some DivX files. It works extremely well on most of the files but for some they are all blocky, the colours are weird and basically the content is unwatchable (the sound seems to be the only thing unaffected). I have checked the files and they are all encoded with Xvid. I can't understand why some of them are fine and the others are not??

I made a backup of the files on the same type media (DVD+R) just in case I needed them and when I use the backup discs I get the exact same problem

Can you suggest what may be wrong? Would it be possible to re-encode the files to a different format? Maybe I need to update the firmware on the DVD player??

Oh, by the way ALL the files play perfectly on my laptop??

    Many thanks,
    Mark

A piece of advice for this issue: press twice system menu on the remote control, when playing. The colours will be OK. Another trick for subtitles to be displayed with a transluced black behind.

Shadow divx subtitles trick with multiple files on disk

"Whenever the player goes into NO MENU mode, it scans the inserted disc for all
types of known files and then assigns each one of them a number. While doing
this we can see "PLEASE WAIT... " blinking on the screen.

1- We set the player to MENU ON mode and then browse the menu and check the
numbers that have been assigned to each file (We should also browse subfolders).
2- Set the player to NO MENU mode and when the first file of the disc starts
    playing press STOP.
3- With your remote, enter the number of the subtitle file (found on step 1)
and press OK. A small hand will appear on screen and then press SUBTITLE
button. You will read DIVX SUBTITLE SELECTED.
4- Now enter the number of the video file and press OK on your remote. The
    movie starts to play.
5- Now press SYSTEM MENU twice like on first procedure.

Same, but for disks with one movie file:

    Steps:
This procedure works with discs having only one video file.
1- In Navigation Menu, select the subtitle file by pressing SUBTITLE button on
    the remote.
2- Instead of pressing PLAY, press DISC MENU button on the remote. By doing so
the player starts playing the movie into NO MENU mode.
3- When the movie starts, press SYSTEM MENU button. Configuration Menu will
appear so then press that button once again so the movie continues playing.
4- That's all! Subtitles will appear with a translucent black shadow."

Yes, please , I am curious. It works in my case. By the way, it is a new firmware update on Philips site, version 0112. But I am afraid to try it, since I am happy with my player until now.

    Good luck.
