    Hi All,

I've been recommended to your site in the hope you can help me.

I have been burning avi files to disc for quite some time now, but recently have been having trouble with the quality of the file once I've burnt to disc. If I open the file and watch on WMP, it's fine. If I burn to disc and try to watch the file on my laptop, Divx player or even the PC I burned the disc on, playback is heavily pixelated throughout. (Audio is fine and I've not had any problems burning audio CD's)

Things I've tried that haven't changed the quality are:
:: 3 different dvd rom burners (including Sony, HP lightscribe both 18 months old)
:: 1 different cable from dvd rom to motherboard :: 4 different types of disc including Sony and Verbatim CD-r / DVr
:: Uninstalling Nero (v6.6.1.15) and reinstalling it
    :: Alternative burning software (CDBurnerXP)
:: Update on Motherboard drivers (ASUS A8n-SLi Premium)
    :: Update on Divx codecs
:: Divx repair on files (all files have no issues)

The problem is not just with avi files. I recently loaded some home videos onto the computer and used windows movie maker to edit them. This file is also fine on the PC but dreadful quality when on disc.

I would usually burn .avi files as 'data' with nero as I have always done. I don't convert them to dvd or other formats for playback.

The .avi files I have been having issues with are generally 128kbps with dimensions of 624x352 (although some have been up to 166kbps and dimension of 720)

I have a feeling there's a setting somewhere that we've overlooked, but I haven't got a clue where it would be!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have made clips of the before and after for examples. I can post these on a video site and link here if that's allowed?

    Many thanks in advance,
    Amy

The default for DivX is 780Kb/S.

Thanks Attar. I can't seem to find the right menu to get me into the page you have screen printed.

I am using DivX, not DivX Pro if that helps?

    Many thanks,
    Amy

The bit rate you quote for the video is too low.
Is it a typo or are you setting these values - and if so which program are you using to set them and why?

Some of the files are downloads. I hovered over them to get the properties and that was what they were coming up with. Have I got confused with the audio rates? If not, I'm assuming that was how there were originally recorded. It's not a setting I have done myself

I don't know if that helps? Forgive me. When it comes to fixing computers, I'm a complete Newbie!

    Hi Again,

I have looked into the properties of one of the files and the 128kbps is indeed the audio bitrate (I told you I was a newb!)

    Video information:
Frame Rate: 23 frames per second
    Data Rate: 1108 kbps
    Video Sample Size: 24 bit
    Video Compression: XVID

Hopefully this sheds a bit more light on the query.

    Thanks again

If the download plays ok on the PC and has been simply burned as data on a CD or DVD, then it should play back on the PC the same - assuming you use the same player in both cases.

I expect the disk to show the same problem on a standalone player.

On the original PC drag the file off one of the disks onto the desktop and play it;it should still be the same data as the source and should playback the same.

Hi Attar - I tried burning to my E drive, then putting the burned disc back into the E drive and copying the file back to my desktop, but the quality is not the same as the original.

Am I able to post a link to You Tube on here? I've uploaded a 'before and after' burning file of a home video so you can see the issue for yourself, but don't want to break any forum rules.

    Thanks,
    Amy

From your description it should be a burner or media problem - yet the burn doesn't fail and you have used multiple burners and different media.
Try using Windows to burn an AVI to a CD (copy and paste or drag instead of Nero or other software).

Then I am going to pass you to the Videohelp forum - I'm out of suggestions.

Thanks so much for your help Attar. If you're confused, you can imagine how I feel! :eek:S

I'll see if the other forum can help me out. I'll keep you posted

    Thanks again
    Amy
