Real newbie here!! Can I play a movie in DVD PAL format on my laptop's DVD drive? We have several -- one is Matsushita/IBM model UJDA730. Or do I need to use one of the convertors I see you guys talking about?
    Thanks in advance! Jeanie

    Hiya jsrabu,

    Yeah, do it.

Watch out for one thing though: DVD Region Codes!!

Your DVD Drive firmware will allow you to change region codes no more than 5 times, then it LOCKS!!

So use a utility called DVD region-Free:

    well worth 40 bucks...

Almost all DVD Player software will handle PAL/NTSC timing structure conversion without any problems.

    WinDVD.
    Power DVD.
    etc.
    etc.

Converters only really come into play when trying to display on a TV, though that is less of an issue nowadays as more and more DVD Players and TVs are multi-standard.

But watch out if you are in the U.S., as they lag behind the rest of the world in supplying multi-standard kit - so it is harder to get it there.

    Have Fun....
