Playing Hi-8 analog tape on digital 8 camera erase it?

    I have a couple of analog Hi-8 tapes that I want to burn to DVD. I have access to a Sony Digital 8 camera that claims to play analog tapes. The owner tells me he lent it to a friend for the same purpose and it erased or some how messed up the analog tape.
    Anybody ever hear of this?

    It shouldn't but most of the newer Sony Digital8 camcorders don't play Hi8 or 8mm tapes anymore. Also as far as I know no Digital8 camcorder will play EP taped Hi8 or 8mm tapes. I have a list of what capabilities most camcorders can and can't play, if you want the list I can e-mail it to you.
