i'm sure this question has been asked numerous times but would like any help that's out there.
i am having a problem with getting my burned dvds to play on a standard dvd player. i have the platinum version of dvd xcopy. however if i load it into the computer it plays just fine.
when i first starting burning them they played on both the compute and the dvd player. they even played on my ps2.
now they will only play on the computer.
    anyone have any solutions.
    thanks

i have not changed medias. i use memorex dvd+r that was working at first but now doesn't. i have tried various things such as reading it on both drives and then burning it to the rewritable.
it says the burn is complete like everything is fine.
    this really has me stumped?
    any other suggestions?

Your problem is most likely due to memorex media. It is the most unrecommended media and causes more problems than any other media I know of. It is very incosistant not only from batch to batch but also within the same package. Complete garbage. Do a search for memorex and you will see all the bad reviews and problems. Look at my sig and others as well.

Try some better high quality media. Online: verbatum datalifeplus, genuine taiyo yuden, or branded ritek ridata. Local: verbatum (azo dye) maxell, fuji (made in japan), or sony. Stay away from memorex, hp, phillips, no name brands, and retail store branded media eg: staples, compusa.

Personally I have had excellent results and probably prefer verbatum datalifeplus but others will swear by taiyo yuden's although they like the verbatums too. Taiyo yuden's work good for me also but my verbatum scans are just a little better is all.

Either way you go you can't go wrong, just make sure the verbatums say azo dye on the package and be aware that there are some fake TY's out there. For best assurance that you are getting the real deal stay with a reputable store. Some recommended online stores are meritline, newegg, rima, and supermediastore. Be leary of shop4tech. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anymore questions you may have. I'll get my buddy kivory to offer his opinion as well. He really knows his media and his recomendations are good as gold.

    hi wrongfoot~ welcome to AD~ :)

as my good friend Mort suggested, i strongly agree that the reason for your dvd player incompatibility is due to POOR quality Memorex media~ i can imagine that you say you are using memorex dvd+r, so, your possible media ID codes could be as follows, this is only a hunch unless you can scan your discs and prove my point here :

    1. 4x dvd+r =CMC MAG.F01 = CRAP (more elaboration below)

    2. 8x dvd+r = CMC MAG.E01 = CRAP (anything made by CMC MAG regardless of the last 3 letters/numbers following it are horrible)

    3. 16x dvd+r = CMC MAG.M01 = CRAP again~ sorry, Memorex really likes CMC MAG and thus gives themselves a bad name due to the horrible quality of CMC MAGs (CMC MAG is the manufacturer by the way, Memorex rebadges/relabels their media purchased from CMC MAG)

so, in short, anything made by CMC MAG will give you headaches and problems with not only playback/pixellation/or total NON-PLAYBACK with due time~ they deteriorate over time to the point where even your computer might not be able to read them after awhile..yes, they are THAT bad~ :p

regarding the 2nd question you asked Mort, i would recommend Taiyo Yuden 1st, with Verbatims a VERY close 2nd~ check my sig for what i PERSONALLY feel are the best media out there~ beware of TY fakes as Mort pointed out, but, as long as you buy from REPUTABLE online outlets, you should be fine...i can verify them personally for you to confirm authenticity TOO if you decide to get some Taiyo Yudens in the near future~

Mort's list is VERY accurate...i stand behind his recommendations 100%, so please do yourself a favor wrongfoot, get some good media and all will be well~ :p if there are any other questions you might have regarding TY or Verbatim (#1 and #2 of the media I personally suggest) feel free to drop a line back in this thread, i have it bookmarked now :)

wish you the best of luck w/ your new media, i think a change will get you going in the right direction~ :)

you guys beat me to it :)

all i have left to offer is the 2nd link in my signature re Memorex, and even then the guys above have more than adequately slapped Memorex & CMC's hands for having the cheek to keep selling so much utter rubbish

ok kivory and mort. i have went online and checked out the dvds from meritline and others.
i am going to order from there after i have asked this last question and get a response.
since i am not an expert at this just yet, does it matter if it is dvd-r or dvd+r and does it matter if the ty dvds are 4x, 8x etc etc.
the price of the dvds does not matter to me i just want the best ones to resolve my problem.
    you guys have been great.

Before I answer that question, what brand and model dvdrw do you have? Certain brands perform better with one than the other. Some brands you can booktype dvd+r to dvd-rom. As a general rule dvd+r booktyped dvd-rom is the most compatable format with stand-alone players followed by dvd-r then dvd+r but newer players will usually play them all.

when i am using it, it says the max read speed is 40 and write speed is 40 also.
    i hope that helps.

I'm not familiar with tdk drives. I know they are rebadged but not sure who makes them. You will probably be ok going with either dvd+r or dvd-r as long as it is high quality media but you might want to go with dvd-r just to be on the safe side since it is a lttle more compatable with stand-alone players. Kivory and I use dvd+r booktyped dvd-rom but creaky uses dvd-r without any problems. I'm just not sure if your drive is booktype capable.

The speeds you posted are for cd's. The fastest speed available for dvd's is 16x. Most here burn at 4x, 8x tops to reduce the chance of write errors. A few minutes more but worth the wait.

    hey mort,
i'm going to wear you out with these questions.
what does it mean booktype compatible?
what do you mean by a stand alone player?
    what's the difference between dvd+r and dvd-r?

Here's a good read. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150 Some brands of dvdrw's are not capable of doing this. Lite-on, benq, phillips, plextor, most sony's, and I think LG are. NEC is but requires being flashed w/ modified firmware. Pioneer is not.

This is the dvd player you use to play dvd's on your tv (set-top player)

They are kind of like vhs verses betamax. Both are similar but also have definite differences. Here's another good read. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/113

Hey Mort, I am also new at dvd recording. I thought I might share some of my experiences with you. When I first started everything was great. Then sound started lagging behind the video sometimes as much as 2 or 3 seconds. The sound sync was fine when played on my PC only lagged on my stand alone ( player connected to my T.V.). I tried a lot of things. Changing media did not help.
I had several different burning softwarez Nero Ultra, WinDVD.... I tried all of them. No help. I deleted every one of them and reinstalled one at a time burned a disk then if the disk was good I kept the software if it wasn't I deleted it again and tried a different software. I ended up deleting all except Nero Ultra 6.6.0.13. I have burned about 10 movies since. All have been good.
It appears software conflicts happen for no reason and give no error message.
Sorry to be so long. Hope I have helped.

mort has given you EXCELLENT advice and i could not have said it better myself...hope your problems/issues will be resolved once you get your new media...as per your question about what kind to get...as long as you obtain AUTHENTIC TYs...meritline is reputable in my book, then it's basically your choice..there is NOT MUCH of a difference in quality between 4x,8x,16x TYs...other than the obvious speed ratings~ as mort mentioned, i booktype ALL my dvd+r media to dvd-rom so i naturally use DVD+R more frequently than i do with the dvd-r format~ :)

secondly, another thing to be weary of is if you do opt to purchase the higher media (ie. the 16x TYS) DO NOT burn them at maximum speed 16x, your chances of errors on even such a great media will significantly increase. i personally burn ALL my backups @8x, but, to ensure a good burn, i would even suggest even slower 4x-6x if necessary~

hope that helps to get you started in the right direction, im sure once you try the TYs, you won't regret your change~ :) good luck
