Whenever I try to play a movie that I've downloaded, an error message pops up: "DivX Player.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." But it's not just with Divx, it's with every player. I've tried about ten different ones. At first I thought it was just a bad file, but I downloaded other ones, and none of them will work. I got an idea to try to play these movies on my laptop, and they worked fine (and my lapttop is crazy old). I tried digging through the forums to find an answer to my problem, but I can't seem to find anything. Some help would be awesome. Thanks...

Try mplayer or VLC. Neither relies on installed dshow filters so it should work fine.
