My dvd drive keeps making music cd's that skip. I've tried everything. I cleaned it out extensivly, then I bought a brand new 100 dollar sony double layer dvd drive and still the same result. Then I did a system restore to the earliest point in my cpu and it is STILL doing it at almost the same spots on the tracks that i'm recording them on. Does anyone know what the hell is going on here? Could it be a virus or something?

i had the same problem but come to find out it was the cds i was using . so u may want to try and different kind of cds. however i was able to get rid of the skipping on the cds when i lower the burning speed to like around 16 or 8. also what brand of disc are u using?

i'm using the nero program from the dl page here from afterdawn. The disks i'm using are two different kinds. I forget what brand I was using before, but they skipped, then I bought some expensive maxell musicPro which is supposed to have a couple layers for anti skipping. I dont think its the disks. ARe there any viruses that could cause this or no?

I called Dell and asked them how to restart my cpu from when I first bought it and they asked for 100 bucks....i'm definatly not giving them that.

Also, the nero program wont let me lower the burn speed past a certain speed. I think it was 8 or 16 was the lowest. I would do 1x if I could, but it wont let me.

Yes, i've burned them at the slowest speed that I could and still the same result. I'm really stumped on this one, what can I do about this?

try tranfering the oringal cd to your harddrive then play it to make sure its playing back correctly ,then burn it from your harddrive with nero ,musicmatch etc. with good media (the maxell should be fine) and 16X should work fine

IMPORTANT turn everything else off when your burning ,even your internet connection ,this will help also.

lets us know if this works

I've also turned everything off including my internet and still i get the skipps. The compilations are from limewire songs, its not from a cd. But when I listen to the songs in windows media player they dont skip, only when I transfer them to a cd.

What kind of media are you using? The best media is Taiyo Yuden and I have found that the one place where they sell genuine TY's are at http://mrsmedia.com. But these are close to my house, which is near LA, CA. For your location you have to call Microboards at 1-800-646-8881 to find out what is the nearest location to you (I have been in touch with TY for two weeks now and will be posting a detailed thread soon.)
If you don't want to go through the trouble, you could also try verbatum which often uses TY. If you still have problems afterwards, then the song that you are trying to copy is messed up. Here is a test to try:
1)Use Exact Audio Copy to rip songs from your CD into your HD
2)Burn them onto your CD using a reasonable speed (with TY you can use over x40 without any problems.)

This should reveal any problems that might be with your hardware. What software you use is not as essential, but I think that the best software with the most funtionality is currently Acoustica mp3 CD Burner 4.1 because it very simple yet has so many useful features.

is the cd physically skipping, or is it just the audio that's skipping? like, if you were to put it in a standalone cd player and watch the timer, does the timer skip or does the timer go on counting seconds while the audio skips?

Good question. The timer goes on as planned, but the audio skipps. I did notice today that after I burn my cd that it has these lighter bands or rings around the cd, i'm almost sure thats whats causing this. Whats going on here??????????

have you try just burning a cd on the fly( making a backup of a oringal cd)? try that and see if it works that rules out your burner.only other thing i would know to do it try different blank media TDK or Sony is good also

    Interesting problem..

Have you uncompressed the MP3 files into wave and then inported the wave files into nero? This may help..
