How old is your drive? My best guess is that it is getting pretty old since the latest firmware is dated 2003. You can try updating to the latest from HERE, but if that doesn't work it may be time for new hardware. You may also try different media, but that is usually not as much of a factor when dealing with CDs as DVDs.
Did you try updating your firmware yet? Have you tried any other disks? I can't tell you 100% on anything, but I can tell you that not all ODD will let you down slowly, some will just up and start failing. So try to eliminate other possible causes but be prepared to have to purchase a new burner. Good news is they can be bought for 25-30 dollars.
I would suggest updating to 7.10.1.0 from here http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/?2893 I believe the latest firmware is 1.33...go to Pioneer site and update Try increasing the burn speed to at least 32X
