I have bought a used laptop but when insalling windows 98 it installs up to restarting the computer. on restarting it brings some information that it is "determining system contents: mmx" with some graphs readings. How do I go back to finish the installation. Please help me.
it is a hp omnibook 4150 pentium II 300mghz 64 mb Ram disc drive no floppy I can access the bios setup and I can access booting from a cd rom. waiting for help
Since you don't have a floppy drive for it, a floppy boot disk isn't going to help. However, if you know the hard drive manufacturer's name, you can usually download a diagnostic CD ISO to create a bootable CD. From there, you can run a test to verify the hard drive's integrity and do a low level format. It'll wipe the disk clean. You should also be able to create a FAT32 partition. Once that is all done, try starting setup again. After copying the files, it will reboot to finish the installation. Just leave the 98 CD in the drive until you get to the desktop. If you cannot locate an ISO to create a diagnostic disk, go here: http://www.thetechguide.com/howto/winmebootcd.html Download the Windows ME boot CD image, create a CD from it...boot the laptop from that CD. You will have a menu option, use number 2 to boot to DOS with CD support. From there you can run FDISK to wipe all the partitions, create a new one...and format it to prepare it for install.
Thanks alot Morph416 . I have formatted and installed windows 98. however the the screen is only showing in the middle. Is it the display because it is at the minimum. In display settings I cant increase or slide the lever from lower side to the higher. It seems to be stuck and it shows 16 bit seting. Wat next?? and will I be able to load office 2000?
Windows 98 lacks all the system drivers for your laptop except for the bare minimum needed to get it running. Next, install the chipset drivers, then video, then sound. Office 2000 should work just fine.
