As mentioned above, I need something that can SERIOUSLY compress files. By this I mean make them considerably smaller.

Most of the files are PSP UMD backups and .avi files (around 370mb) , and when I compress these files using WinZip or WinRAR they only decrease in size by about 2 to 10 MB.

Is there any way to make them much smaller.

PS does anyone know how make a file into the .r00, .r01,...... format, beacuse some of these files I have seen are up to 50% smaller than the original.

    Thanks

Compression all dpends on the content. .avi files are already pretty tight as are some .iso files.

With rar the way to make multiple files is to set the "split archive at xxxmb" option when creating. Again it will not compress any more than it can..

The compression really just squashes the whitespace.. areas within the files which contain no data. 7zip gives the highest compression ratio, but I'm not sure that is free.

I'll try the multiple .rar file method.

I tried compressing to 7z format using the program on this site, but it didn't really help.

Is any specific program better than the other as I may give it a go.

Thanks for telling me that some files can't be compresssed that much.

I tried compressing files using 7z to 7zip format with ultra compression and some files became seriously compressed

Just what I wanted :D (while others didnt but I now know why)

    Thanks for helping me out.
