    Hi

OK, newbie, trying to make backups of my disks, with newly installed Lite On 1693S. Play on XP Home machine, Philips DVP642 and (was hoping) Polaroid PD0723 portable DVD player (for travel, leave origs at home).

    1) Serenity (movie only).
    Works fine on PC.
First chapter lags and has colored squares on Polaroid. After opening sequence, seems fine (didn't watch whole movie).

    2) So far, out of five disks burned... Only Serenity above works on the Polaroid. Am I doing something wrong? They all work OK on the Philips DVD player and on the PC. When I stick them in the Polaroid, I get "Bad Disc" message.

    3) Except that sometimes, on the Philips, the first few minutes of the movie, there is a funny symbol on the upper left. It is a symbol of a movie camera (side view, lens faces right) and then "1/2". What does this mean? I tried diff buttons on the Philips remote, but could not get rid of it. It goes away after awhile.

    4) There were some discs I could not burn, either due to bad scratches (can't play the whole disk either, have to FF thru bad parts) or new encryption/protection (Madagascar? found a thread haven't read it through yet)

Can someone help me fix this? In particular, I want the burnt disks to work on the Polaroid, so we can travel with our movies without worrying about losing/damaging our DVDs... I'm really bummed right now that only one out of 5 is working!!

    Thanks

Sorry, hit Post before I finished.

    (1) For Serenity:

    -PC - fine
-Polaroid - only one that works on this player, but lag and splotches for first couple of minutes.
    -Philips - fine.

I am using DVD Shrink to create ISO then DVD Decryptor.

Four were Imation 8X DVD+R discs. Then I tried a Verbatim 8X DVD-R disc and got the same problem (works on PC and Philip DVD Player, but not on Polaroid portable DVD player).

    Hmm

Imation disks were made in Taiwan. No good?

4X, huh. Been burning at 8X (writer is 16X, but I am guessing you mean I should burn at half the speed of the media, not the burner).

Would any of that account for the problem with the portable DVD player tho? The box says it can play DVD-R, DVD+R, etc and is region free.

    could be the problem,
test a movie on 4 speed, sometimes players are picky and it makes a difference.

Auuugh. You guys are right. As usual.

Tried a burn with 4X and one with 8X. The 4X worked on the Polaroid, the PC and the DVD Player. The 8X only worked on the PC and DVD Player.

DANG. Already have 6 other 8X burns. Bummer.

So if I get 16X discs, I can burn at 8X? Sucks that I have to go at 4X when I have a 16X burner, though I guess burning is actually the least time consuming part.

How about the other stuff? Anybody know what that weird

    [movie camera image] 1/2

means? I also notice that all my disks default to subtitles on. I do re-author them to remove unwanted stuff. Is there an option I am missing?

If burnning at 4x works on all your playbacks don't worry about burnning at 8x I burn only at 4x to be honest I can't tell the difference on burn time or playback

    Double bummer.

It wasnt that simple. On a diff disk, I made 4X and 8X versions, and both failed on the portable. Both work fine on PC and DVD player. Very frustrating.

Even weirder, the 4X worked on the portable the first time I tried it. Then I tried to FF and it froze. So I shut down and tried to play it again. Bad disc. Now it only says Bad Disc.
