I am planing to buy a Sony DRU-510A DVD burner to back-up my DVD movies and PS2 games.

Could someone tell me is this a good burner to buy. Also to copy a standared non-dual layered DVD movie what disc media do i need and how much the discs cost. Would i then be able to play the DVD back-up on a normal DVD player and PS2.

Also what is the best DVD back-up software to buy, I want the qaulity to be exactly the same as the original.

    hi all

My personal preference would be a DVR106D as i have one dual format! the sony can be abit finicky? just read more here on the sony drive against pioneer!

programs i use would be DVD Shrink and NERO !

media its hit and miss but Ritek or Datarite are good! i have done dvd to dvd-r for the PS2!

but a good start is to read here:

Very easy guides to use with pics!

you cant go far wrong there!

When asking if a specific drive is *good* or not, you'll likely get a range of opinions. Tiz kinda like the question....what's better...Ford, Chevy, or Dodge? It's all opinion. Personally, I won't ever buy anything else Sony again. I use an HP 300I and it performs wonderfully. I've burnt several dvd data discs and movies, and haven't had one problem with it. Go to pcworld.com and check out the top ten dvd writers for an unbiased opinion based on their tests. I was pleased to see mine included =)

As for media....I'd go look in the DVD-R media forum here at afterdawn for the suggestions of those who are experienced in using different types and brands. I use only Maxell and Memorex and have had no problems with either. Like anything else, you get what you pay for.

Lastly...software....there are oodles of articles in these DVD forums about that. Do a quick scan down the subject lines in each forum and you'll see that question asked and answered a zillion times. I now see why the old-timers here get so irritated when people ask these type questions. Every one of your questions are listed 10x over.....just go look.

I have to agree with Rotary (stephanie - this weekend..LMAO) and Bodene....

I used to have a VERY faithful Pioneer 103, but gave it to my dad, just upgraded to the one Rotary has - no issues - plus the advantage of both formats.....

NOTHING is really the best, as it all depends on your setup/media etc.....

Many people have different process which work well, some people try and use the same process and it falls over.....

However, if you are just starting out then I think Dvd Shrink is the best foot forward as Rotary suggested....as it is free and also gives you a little insight on dvd structuring and not just doing the process behind the scenes (if you know what I mean)......

Again when it comes to burning software - most program vendors give you the options of obtaining a trial version first - A must in my opinion to try out......
Look at the guide Rotary suggested, this will shed a little more light on whats involved..

The media is hit and miss, and mostly dependent on the player - the PC will play a cat if you shoved it in the tray.....so down to player really.....

I use Ritek GO4 dye based discs - like Traxdata or just unbranded Ritek GO4, but the only opinion I have is that the darker the dyed surface, then the more solid decoding of information you wil get........

Bodene, no need to get irritated over them just point them in the right direction.......every little helps....

Hope this helps...._X_X_X_X_X_[small]Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down
