I have a plextor 708UF and have trouble closing out the dvd's. It either hangs at the end and won't close or it says it's successful, but they don't play in any dvd players. I have the internal 708 on another computer and it is copying just fine, no problems. I use CloneDVD and ANY DVD on both computers. It isn't the 708UF since if I swap it onto my other computer, the problem goes away. I'm beginning to think it may be a software conflict on the one computer. Has anyone else had this problem? I've tried all I can think of. Oh, I also burn with Nero and ShrinkDVD, same problem on the one computer. Thanks all for the help.
Hi and Welcome vastrand, Memorex is a good example, has posted figures as high as 50% coasters (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. Remember, it’s a gamble, some people win, most lose, varying amounts but they still lose :-( Let’s get your media straightened out - 1.* Cheap media skips, freezes, fuzzes, pixelats, refuses to be recognized, partially jams and of course, our good old standby, happening far too often, either doesn’t burn or doesn’t play at all:-( Cheap media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way ! 2. A top grade media is needed for DVD reproduction ! Ritek G04's or Verbatim are what we’re looking for OR any media boasting “Advanced AZO Metal Dye”, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are a bit “pricey” they are acceptable. Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 to down below a dollar a disc - Using top grade media can guarantee one thing to an absolute certainty, it surely cannot hurt. Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap discs and good copies from 3 Verbatim discs or 3 Ritek G04 discs - which ones then are too expensive ? Remember, Memorex, Fuji, TDK, Orange Pack and others are good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don’t work well for DVD backups. (*A sometimes fix is to compress your DVD to somewhere around 4.3 Gig even. By reducing the amount to be burned you can stay away from the edges where the dye tends to be uneven and the discs may be brittle.) I am using the Ritek G04 and it works without a hitch on the internal drive. The external drive will read anything I've copied on the internal 708 so it isn't the drive. And yes I do compress the file size down to 4300 to stay away fromt he edges. Haven't got a clue to what the difference is between the two drives other than one is external. Thanks for your comments, please let me know if you have any other ideas.
Just a shot in the dark, but is the connection USB 2.0? Does the problem computer have Roxio software on it by chance?
That could very well be your problem right there. Roxio is notoriously bad about screwing up other burning software. I'd suggest getting rid of Roxio and trying things then. You may need to reinstall your other burning apps if things still don't clear up.
I'll try it and hope that clears up the problem. Will let others know how it turns out. Thanks for your help.
Don't know if it was Roxio or not, just decided to burn with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and it seems to work without any problems.
Frustrated newbie. Also a 708uf w/ dvdxcopy platinum using TDK media. I get error reading primary volume descriptor and error DVD Xpress Video_TS\VTS_01_0.IFO. When this doesn't occur, the step 1 to hard drive hangs up either at the end or midway through the disk. I have uninstalled Roxio, still o for 7 on burns. Yhe Plextor burner is new. Using for the first time. Help!
Hi there butchmel, glad to welcome you here - Using XCopy are we - Have you checked your PC against the "Black List" ?? http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/49908 ALSO: One trick is to start your DVD in your PC’s PowerDVD player, let it play for a minute then open your program and begin to process the DVD while it’s playing, as soon as your program finds the DVD, turn off the player. A reminder, play your DVD in your DVD-ROM. It’s easier for your PC to read the disc and it is much easier on your DVD burner. Constant stopping and starting of your burner required to read a disc can cause premature wearing out of your drive. Hope this helps, Pete
