hi everyone i just bought a 740. I was going through the forums and read a few posts about qsuite for it. To my understanding this drive is a rebadged benq 1640, where do i get qsuite from? and can i still run it even if its a plextor drive? what advantages will i gain from it? thanks
Yep, It's a rebadged benq 1640 and a hell of a burner! That utility should work.Double check that plextors firmware and see if it is close to the 1640's firmware.Mine is in my sig and is the latest fw update. Here's the link to the q-suite: http://www.benq.us/Products/DVDRewriter/index.cfm?product=572 Just click downloads. You may even want to update the firmware as well as download the q-suite. Advantages: For me,it's the booktyping capability. This alters the plus format media and turns it to dvd-rom,the more compatable format for stand alone players. No more messing around with the dash format from now on. It burns anything I slap in her,but I stick with the quality stuff. Overburn protection. These benqs will fly. They have no trouble burning 8x media at 12x and 16x if the burn setting is left on max. This overburn protection will allow you burn a max speed, per your blank's rated speed. I have 3 pcs set up for dvd burning. Two of them have dual drives, and one has single drive.Dual drives,I have no trouble controlling speed for my 1620 and 1640. That single drive pc you have to insert original, set the burn speed to 2.4x or max. Since this has the benq 1620,my +8x media will fly and I have to burn at 2.4x or abort when it calls for a blank disc.I then re-load that iso file and burn at 4x or 8x. I'm considering placing that 1640 in there so I don't overburn in that pc and keep away from 2.4x burning. Disadvantages: The q-test scanning program won't work for me.No biggie. I also have dvdinfopro to check my scans. With the higher quality media, the faster burns at 8x and 12 are scanning better than the 4x. My backups that were burned at 2.4x have performed the worst.8x is no trouble!
Hey thanks saugmon. Now I have a silly question how do i find out what firmware im running on this drive, I downloaded the latest one from plextor but the file name is 740a_101 so i have no idea. And q suite will work with my drive right?
Majority of programs will tell you. Here's a free handy program, also helps to ID those MID codes on your dvd media: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm Nero infotool will tell you. You can even go into device manager under cd/dvd drives.Click on your 740 and click details tab. That firmware should be all the way to the right. See if it's similar to the BSMB firmware. It may be BSKB/BSLB.I updated mine right after I recieved it from newegg. That utility should work. The worst thing that could happen is it tells you that your drive isn't a benq and it won't do anything.
Ya saugmon all it says is plextor 740a fw 1.01. I so i take it that its not a benq and i wouldn't be able to run q-suite.
You'll probably have to use the utility called plextools. Very similar to q-suite. Here's a link that may take you there, only 2000,000 sites with plextools while doing a google search: http://www.plextools.com/index.asp I think if you still download q-suite,see if it will recognize your plextor 740 and allow it to use that utility.
I downloaded qsuite, opened it up and it shows my drive but it only has 2 tabs there info and booktype, Is there suppose to be other tabs?
Here's a pic of mine from my main pc with the 1640: I have 7 tabs total.Info/booktype management/q-scan/wopc/test write/solid burn/and overspeed. I also have q-suite on my other 2 pcs that both have benq 1620s with the firmware of B7-V9.The overburn protection is suppose to work with the B7-V9 firmware, but not in both those pcs. They only have 4 tabs. The overspeed and solid burn has no tabs. The booktype utility is the most important part of that utility for me.
You cannot use QSuite without crossflashing the drive to a BenQ 1640 with a firmware after BSLB, in order to do that you have use a .cvt file and a WinDWFlash.
hmmm sounds a little complicating, If you could tell me how to crossflash it or show me to a guide on it. Honestly is it worth doing?
I just got my 740a today. I upgraded the firmware from plextor.com and downloaded q-suite from the link. When I started q-suite it said it only works with benq drives, but once I selected the 740a instead of my player it allowed me to booktype it with no problems. I watch DVDs on my laptop and have only been able to play burned discs if they were DVD-Rs hopefully the booktyping will fix the problem. While using my NEC 2500a I used Ritek -Rs, but I understand plextors work well with Taiyo Yudens. The Verbatims seem similar, anybody know how well they work in the 740a?
The Ridata +R booktyped to -ROM worked fine in my laptop. I got the Ridatas before I knew +Rs wouldn't play in my laptop. Any input on what media I should use will be appreciated.
