Hey all. Its been about 6 months since I've purchased the Plextor PX-740A which I have reflashed to a BenQ 1640. Just recently I've been having some skipping problems during playback of my backups. I've got QSuite on with SolidBurn enabled, Booktyping it to DVD-ROM, and running Firmware BSQB. Thinking that it might be firmware related, I have just recently updated the firmware to BSRB yet the problem still persists. I'm using Verbatims (MCC-004) and found the problem present whether I burn at 4X or 8X. The disc quality scans show an average score of 97, so I don't know what could be wrong. I'm kinda disappointed because I love this drive and I fear that I might have to trade 'er in for another (I'm thinking the PX-750A). If anyone has any suggestions, I'm more than willing to listen. Thanks!

What drive/s show those issues while you view them? Stand alone player/s- the plextor drive-or other pc drives?

You gotta verify one of those problematic backups in other drives to see how they play them. The more, the better.

    97 scores?
I'll bet it's a stand alone player that's showing those issues.Take note of where those issues show up-time frame, then watch them in other drives. Make sure the plextor play's it's own backups, and they should look near original in quality. This will verify if the backups are ok.

If the plextor plays them perfect, usually a dirty laser lens on the standalone player. That lens cleaning is a last resort, before replacement. Those hard cleaning discs can ruin a drive.

Here's the leading candidates, and you'll have to rule them out 1 at a time:

    1) Crap media-bad batch of media
    2) Burned too fast
    3) Burned too slow-if using quality media like ty or verbatim
    4) Compression
    5) Burn engine
    6) Drive quality
    7) Dirty lens.
    8) Multi-tasking
    9) Paper/sticker labels

    You've eliminated 1,2,3,and 6.

Don't burn below 4x on that drive if using MCC-004 media.

Thanks guys! @saugmon, you were correct when you said that the standalone was the culprit. I guess its tome to replace this old player of mine. Thanks again.

You can try running one of those cleaning discs through it before you trash it. It may help?

Those el cheapo $20-$30 players are very good players.
