Hi All, hope this is the right forum for this, if not my apologies.

I'm looking for some advice about a problem I have with my PC. Today my PC turned itself off and reloaded.

The only trouble is, it only loads to a screen asking me to choose normal mode, safe mode etc.... but I cannot select anything with my keyboard (it's wireless) and my PC tries to load as normal after 30 secs, but just after the windows logo appears it resets itself again!

I don't have an XP CD, it was pre-loaded, I don't have recovery console and I have tried looking on the net for other solutions but all to no avail so far.

I have XP Home version SP3.

I think my problem might be linked to my recent install of Kaspersky.

Could this be a virus? What will get me to windows to sort it?

Any help would be much appreciated

I may have a solution for you but you got to get your keyboard working because otherwise it's pretty much it. borrow one from a friend or something. and do you have files in that computer you want or you just want to get your computer back?

you need to get a xp installation cd or a bartpe bootcd. You might have a corrupted windows partition. An abnormal shutdown will usually cause this problem.

When windows cannot locate the next startup files during bootup (because the files are missing or corrupt) windows will hang or reboot at the windows logon screen.

A simple chkdsk c: /f will fix this problem almost everytime. That's why you need a windows bootcd to run the chkdsk command.

I doubt it's a virus/malware problem since your computer starts the bootup cycle. A MBR virus wouldn't let you get that far.

    Thanks for the repsonses.

Well status so far is that I have used Avira Antivirus Rescue CD which has allowed me to scan for viruses. Result was "Zero".

I've now tried a bootable XP CD but states that theres an invalid boot.ini so loads from c:\windows. Still loads to DOS screen after this asking for "safe mode" etc... and then reboots again after windows xp logo appears.

I now have an Avira Boot CD but yet again I need to use a keyboard to select "German or English" Great!!

So every time I get to a DOS window I cannot use my keyboard. Although I did get XP Pro recovery console to DOS that allowed me to run some checks. But both hard drives had not registered so any chkdsk came back with an error "insert disk or cd in c:"

At the moment i'm going around in circles....have managed to arrange for a keyboard with ps/2 connector.

But until I get this later today......any other ideas anybody?

    Problem sorted!

A keyboard with a ps/2 connector allowed me to boot to last working config and now i'm back up and running.....shame about my laptop that now say "cannot find explorer.exe" when it boots and "no more files here" message once it loads into Windows!

Oh well.....one PC down, one to go :)
