A power calibration error means that the default power setting used to test the disc is inadequate for reading the test signal. That means that the disc you are trying to use is not supported by the drive. It may be a poor quality medium, or it might be the best in the world--there is no way of telling since your drive won't work with it. Your drive uses either programmed recording settings if it recognizes the MID (Media Identification) code of the disc or the default settings if it does not recognize the code. Firmware updates often add more MID codes to a drive's recognition table, but not always. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media ARE (Media are plural.) considered the "best" because their MID codes are the most widely included codes and the discs are of consistently good quality. There are many other very good discs whose MID codes are not as well recognized unless new firmware updates include them. These media are unfortunately branded as bad quality. Check to see if a firmware update has been issued for your drive and, if so, if the update resolves the power calibration error.
