    Hello,
Recently in my school, the admins now have the power to view what pupils are doing on their computers and if need be take control of their computer to shut down the disallowed activity such as games or inappropriate websites.
Surely this sort of opression, being spied upon, defies the data protection act?

I have heard that that use the excuse that 'we (us pupils) are being priviledged with the use of their computers, and therefore they are allowed to monitor them as they see fit.'

Apart from feeling spied upon and insecure about my usage, another problem is that the 'admin' that is using this control are retarded librarians that type with just their index fingers, and (from experience) dont know the difference between IE and paint.
Luckily this also means they are stupid enough not to notice my VNC connections via http.

Please tell me what theyre doing is an infringement of my rights.

    Thanks,
    Osiris

Grow up and live with it - its a reality of life - after all you are using their equipment and resources.

Buy you own if you are so threatened or insecure.

I'm not sure what type of school you are talking about? In my school district, both the student and parent/guardian have to sign release forms for "appropriate" computer use. That is one of the stipulations in elementary, junior, and senior high school. Privileges and rights....there is a difference.

It is a college in the UK.
I dont remember signing anything to do with computer use.
I missed out the detail that they view our workspaces remotely and can control them remotely if they wish.
We wouldnt even know if theyre watching us and they could be reading personal information such as emails.
    This can't be right..

Sorry, I can't comment on the college/university level. Except rules for computer use should be posted, or have release forms, read and signed. If you do not want personal information spied upon, than perhaps use a computer outside the college classrooms....like the one you are using now? AD can't be an appropriate site LOL

Heh AD is banned completely so i have to RD to get on it.

If theyre not allowed to do it in internet cafes, how are they allowed to at a school?
I havent signed any thing for school since the rules changed.
And when i did sign something when i joined a year ago it said nothing about computers.

Im gonna try and get the new rule in written form and complain.

You go ahead and file your complaint. And once you get out of school and get a job, be sure to file a complaint with the business that hire you, too.

Tell them that they have no business telling you what you can and can't do with the company computers.

Grow up, young fella. YOU are wrong.

In what sense am i wrong?
I am merely asking a question.

No matter how old i am i will always care if people are infringing upon my rights. As far as im concerned they dont have the right to view my private material without my consent, i.e my signature on a contract of agreement.

I want to know WHY they are allowed to do this if indeed they are, not 'oh your wrong, shut up you little kiddie.'

Why are some people so negative?

if using school or business computers, you will be spied on & nothing you can do about it.

If you have private material on the school's computers, I would think that you would revise your plan of how you use THEIR computers.

I don't know that it is people being negative. It is more of the fact that your are in THEIR house, and you need to understand that YOU have to play by THEIR rules, or you don't play. Not all that difficult to understand.

The private information i am refering to is such things as emails and other documents that wouldnt be held on their computers.

    Using your analogy,
how am i supposed to play by and agree to their rules if they keep changing them?
They need consent from the users before being allowed to take those kind of measures.
In theory they should not allow anyone to use their machines until the consent has been received from each individual, but in not doing so they are not following their own rules.
Only follow them when it suits them huh.

I was refering to YOU being negative Mr. Caps lock. Calm down.
