    Hi all,
I've got a problem downloading .avi files. When I play them , (in most cases) the audio & video are out of sync. i.e. You will see someones lips moving & a few seconds later you can hear them actually speaking. (Very annoying).
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Dave

well, then, you may be having a problem because you're trying to play NTSC encoded files, and your system is PAL, or vice versa. the framerates are different, and cause this problem.

get an encoder from programs on this site and try re-encoding your vids to your standard, paying attention to framerates.

    good luck.

    Hi chromesn,
I'm confused. You are right (I think) about the original encoding being NTSC, as I use PAL in Australia. I downloaded and ran the Microsoft one first (Decchecksetup.exe). It lists 4 installed decoder files, but when I click on one (or all) of them I get an error saying that they are not compatable with WMP10. When I downloaded the ASPI file & ran that, after a reboot nothing seemed to have changed. What do I have to do now to re-encode my vids? I've run a couple of videos & they are still the same. I want to burn them to DVD with Nero. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks, Dave.

ok, the deccheck thing really just tells you if you have the proper decoder to play dvd's (since xp does not come with a dvd decoder, you have to get one like intervideo's "windvd 6" from another source. pain in the butt, since you don't know which ones will work. go here to find out :

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/partners/dfw/partnerlisting.mspx

i've found that having the decoder helps with playback of other files, for some reason. prolly the extra codecs lol.

it says for MCE but these all work with xp.

as for re=encoding, there are many programs available on this site to do so.

the problem seems to be that PAL uses 25 frames per second, and NTSC uses 29.75 or something like that, and that screws up the voice-to frame so your problem may lie there. in most videos, there isn't any way to lock them together. so i'd at least TRY reencoding the vids. (i'm sure there are ppl on here who can give you step by step instructions: not being that familiar with PAL, i can't tell you exactly how to do it)

    hope this helps.

    Hi chromesn,

Thanks for your help. I'll try again. If I still have a prob, I'll try something else. (Don't know what). But I'll find give it a go & see wot happens.
