    I've searched the forums and found similar threads and I think my firmware is outdated. I was able to burn discs fine 2 days ago but I bought a new batch of Memorex DVD-Rs and it always says illegal disc when I try and burn something.

    I am not sure what to do, I read about the firmware and how it can kill your drive and I just want to make sure I am doing everything right. The computer I am burning the stuff off of is pretty old (like 05), here is what Nero says about my drive:

    LITE-ON DVD-RW SOHW-1633S

    After I start to burn the disc the files get cached and then it says illegal disc. How do I view any kind of log? I cannot seem to locate my Nero History.

    PLEASE HELP.

    Which version of Nero are you using?

    Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt

    Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt
    Most likely it seems that your burner does not like the media you are using. A firmware update could fix that, but you made a poor choice of discs.

    Post the error log(make sure you don't post your serial number).

    Check firmware for latest version. Visit manufacturer's site, look up burner specific number.

    Way too much going on here. The object is to keep as much memory free as you can while burning. In other words, don't multitask, surf, etc while burning.

    Not real good blank media to use. Try MIJ Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, or Sony.

    8x is the max i would burn, slowing down to 4x or 6x wouldn't hurt a thing.

    I was just righting the whole thing that 7thsinger did but he beat me to it:)
    I just want to also suggest removing Roxio, it conflicts with Nero
    First manually uninstall Roxio and then run Roxio Zapper to remove all the traces of it from your computer.

    Thanks a lot guys I'll do everything you said.

    Unfortunately those were the discs that I have and my only blank ones. I am just burning some stuff to pass on to a friend like a data DVD so it shouldn't be too bad to use it right?

    I'll get back to you with the info on my firmware on the drive.

    Thanks again!

    @singer
    Nah, it's all good! I am retiring soon!

    @Sythron
    As for the media, if you have an OfficeMax close by, they have Verbatim on sale, 100 for $25. The sale I think is through the 29th.

    I am in Canada, and at all the BestBuys and WalMarts it's Memorex on sale... sucks! I can buy a 100 Sony pack but it's 29.99 compared to the 100 pack of Memorex which is 17.99

    I'll see if I can exchange them at my WalMart.

    PS: Still trying to check my drive out lol...

    And please don't retire!

    If you have Sears in Canada look for the Sony's with Made In Japan on the label, they should be Taiyo Yuden...excellent stuff.

    Thanks, I have a Sears kinda near by, I'll write down that name and be sure to buy those ones for my higher quality stuff like DVDs and Games.

    I cannot find anything on my optical drive that I can understand. I found a few sites with stuff on the 1633S but I didn't get any of it. Can anyone help me? Apparently there are third party manufacturers for this drive and I have no idea where to go to get the firmware for an upgrade.

    I also read that my drive will not read 16X DVD-R which is what the discs I have, currently are.

    This computer that the stuff is on is like a 2005 eMachines computer.

    Thanks for the link, I read some stuff on that site about my drive but I didn't see that one, so which firmware out of the five listed here:

    http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#SOHW-1653S

    should I flash to my drive?

    Thanks again for all the help!
