Had this problem since 1 month ago or so, when I was using Nero 6; I changed to Nero 8. Still the same problem. I remember installing Quicktime and iTunes around the same time I started getting this error, could it have anything to do with it?

    Disc used: Traxdata, 16x, DVD-R
Burn speed: 12x, have tried lower speed previously, still didn't work.
    Hardware: SONY DVD RW DW-Q28A

It burns, stops around randomly (around either 5%, 97% or lead-out), the disc sometimes appears to be written, sometimes not, data is unreadable anyhow, and the disc is unusable.

    Here is the log:

    Hi schizodan
    Welcome to aD

You're getting an illegal disc error which usually means the media isn't supported by the burners firmware.
This is a firmware update out there for your burner so up date it - KYR6.

Still a no do then switch the media to Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

Give that a go and let us know.

    Thank you, so far.

I've downloaded the firmware on my desktop, but it doesn't detect the drive when I click on it (it's an exe).

Do I have to save it somewhere else? Do I have to use another program for the update to take place?

Yes it would just be an exe that needs to be run - saving it to the desktop is usually fine.
Are you getting an error like - target drive not found?
Try the KYS4 - that should be the correct one.

Thank you, again. The KYS4 update worked fine, but the burning still didn't.

From what I saw in the log, there is a difference in the errors: before it was "illegal disc", now it's "invalid block address". What could that be?

    Here is the new log:

I see in both logs that you are using Ritek...as advised not the best media...also burning too fast, slow to 4X

Yes, I mentioned in the first post that I'm using Traxdata discs (which I see are called Ritek). Didn't know they're so bad so I bought 50. I'll just have to get rid of them.

Anyway, before buying OTHER 50 dvds (of an other brand), I want to make sure the problem isn't the burner's. So, my last question stands: what is that "invalid block address" thing?

I'll give it another try with a 4x burn, although I remember doing that before, to no results.

I've now bought some Sony DVD-R discs (remember that my drive is a Sony, so I figured they should work!).

First disc worked; it was burned with no errors.

Second disc failed; the "invalid block address" error again.

    Any ideas?

I mean, I find it very very weird that one burner, given two different discs of the very same type one after another, PLUS the very same settings in NERO and so on, would burn the first without any errors and then refuse to burn the second one.

Try another burning program. Here's a good free one - ImgBurn.
Use the build mode to add and burn any non iso files.

Try cleaning the lens of the drive with like some canned air or a dvd lens cleaner.

I don't think QuickTime or iTunes would cause a problem - I have the latest of each installed but every setup is different. So you could try uninstalling them and see if that works.

Okay, I'll try that one, but still, you have no idea what that "invalid block address" means?

I can't afford wasting more discs - I've already destroyed 30 or so since the errors started popping up one month ago.

The first error in the log is this:
    CdRom0: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1135)
    Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
    Sense Code: 0x0C
    Sense Qual: 0x00

Take the 2nd set of characters from the sense fields and the error code is 030C00 which is also a write error.
More detail can be found here for that error code - link

So give ImgBurn and the lens a cleaning a go and see how that goes.
