I've got a 750GB SATA HDD, and I've followed all the tutorials for xboxhdm, I've even got a SATA to IDE converter. My xbox is softmodded. But here's the problem...

I got the hard drive to copy from the disc I created for xboxhdm, but when I go to lock it, it says, "the drive on primary master is frozen. Can't adjust security on a frozen drive. Try disabling auto-detect in the bios". My problem is, when I select the drive in the bios, there is no auto-detect option. It says something about SMART, that's it. I'm running Windows Vista. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone knows where to find the auto-detect option to shut it off, with Vista, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks guys. Oh, and my Bios version is 5.16, if that helps.

You CANNOT use a SATA drive!

I don't care what converters you have or what, you just can't do it!

That's odd...because the drive is listed on a few sites as being a compatible drive, provided you have the converter I've got. I've been able to everything with it EXCEPT turning off the auto-detect on it...

Okay, so I've got an IDE drive, and got the files from my Xboxhdm disc to copy to it, but, when I go to lock the drive, it has the same problem. It says that the drive on primary master is frozen. Here's my question:

My PC is an HP Pavilion a1720n
The HDD in the PC is a SATA drive. Being that it's a SATA drive attached to a SATA controller, I have no option in the bios for disabling the autodetect on the IDE channels that I use for the xbox HDD I'm creating. Is there another way to disable this auto-detect feature so that the drive can be locked? Or am I S.O.L. in trying to use this PC? Because, knowing what I know about computers, it would seem that everything is going toward SATA in the future, so why there's no control in the BIOS for the IDE channels is beyond me. The only option I have in my BIOS for the IDE is on the SATA controller, to switch it between RAID, AHPCI, and IDE. But I have no options for the IDE channels. And when I select the drives at the "main" BIOS screen, the only option available is something about a SMART test. Any help would be appreciated. I'm stumped...

HP have a pain in the ass BIOS.

    Try this...

Turn off your PC, turn it back on and press the 'Pause|Break' key prior to the BIOS auto detecting HDDs. Perform the hotswap or connection at this point, then continue the boot.

    ;)

I got it to work by using a different PC. But, there's a new issue...

After upgrading the HDD, everything went fine. But, I used the AID disc to install XBMC, and now, the xbox won't read game discs(the original, store-bought ones). The drive doesn't recognize it, and, when I turn the xbox on, even with the drive door closed, it says it's open, and when I close it it says "busy". When it finally scans the disc(still the originals), it says "unknown". But, my question is this:

Since it won't read the discs, I can't use the AID disc. I'm thinking maybe there's a corrupt file on it somewhere. Is there a way to FTP the contents of the original MS dashboard, evoX, etc.?

I got mine working, trying to lock a friend's now, that has the error 5 code. But, your trick for HP bios didn't work, Chunkhead...

Another tip I've seen results with is changing the jumper setting on the HDD to Master or remove it completely! Just remember to put it back to CS when finished!

Give me a run down of the original problem with your mates Xbox, what steps you have already taken! Give as much detail as possible...

He has a bigger HDD he wants installed. I know the drive is compatible, and I know it works. Here's what happened:

I thought maybe I did something wrong when trying to do MY hard drive, and that's why I had to use a friend's PC.(I have a HP with the "pain in the ass" BIOS you described earlier. Here's my dilemma:

The PC is an HP Pavilion 1700 series. I can't unplug the hard drive's IDE cable because it doesn't have one. This PC's hard drive is a SATA hard drive with a SATA controller. There is no slave on the IDE cable, just the DVD burner which is hooked up as Master. xboxhdm will unlock the drive(it did so when I copied my xboxhdm disc to it), but it will not lock it. When I attempt to lock it, I get that damned "drive is frozen, try disabling auto-detection" crap. Since I have no such option to disable in my bios, I'm a little stumped. The only option I have is to set the SATA controller from RAID to IDE, which I've tried, and then disconnected the PC's hard drive, and still nothing. Xboxhdm sees the drive as primary master in the create C: and E: utility...AND, it will unlock a drive no problem. It only gives the "drive frozen" message when I attempt to re-lock it.

If it helps, the bios is v 5.16

Okay, I FTP'd all the files his XBOX was missing from my backup(everything except the EEPROM), but, here's the problem I now have...

When I turn the Xbox on, it will not boot to evoX. The only way to get into evoX is to power the xbox on with the drive open button, and leave it open until it boots to the installer(or whatever you call it), and then I can go into file manager and boot evoX. Also, it will occasionally boot directly to evoX, and when it does, it says the drive is open, even when it isn't. And if I put a game or ANY disc into it, it says "unknown". Even if it's an original game. Is this a corrupt file somewhere?

Okay, everything is working now, oh, and, Chunkhead, thanks for all your assistance. However, I have found one flaw in your theories...

You CAN use a SATA HDD. The one that's in my xbox right now, with EvoX, is a 750GB Seagate SATA HDD. You just have to get a converter like the one shown in this link:

Hook it up on the Master IDE cable, making sure to set the jumper on the vertical bridge board(converter) to Master(as it only has two settings, Master and Slave). Boot your xboxhdm disk, create your C and E drives, and then lock it. And then I used xboxpartitioner to format F and G with 32k clusters. Works like a dream. Hope this information might help someone else that had my problem. And again, Chunkhead, I seriously appreciate your assistance.

And I think I know why I couldn't lock it...feel free, by all means, to correct me if you feel I'm wrong.

The XboxHDM utility is a dos-based linux program. I'm running Windows Vista, which has no DOS that is accessible by the user. Either that, or the SATA controller just simply wouldn't release it's fix on the PC HDD being primary Master...

Only too happy to be proved wrong! Great to hear about your SATA success, I will add the info to the Troubleshooter!

As for your Vista theory, the disc loads it's own Linux system, it has nothing do do with your OS. Most of the time you don't even have that HDD plugged in!

That's why I tried to make it work. I knew it HAD to be possible. As for your response to my theory, I guess it must just be my HP "Pain in the ass BIOS" :)
