Hi, I am having a problem with certain movie files where if there is a subtitle file present then the movie will not play in WMP11. If I run the movie w/o the subtitle it plays fine and if I play the subtitle on another movie the subtitle works fine. If I play the problem movie and subtitle together with VLC Player it works fine too. I've tried using Subtitle Workshop to save the subtitle in different formats and that doesn't help. The problem is that I need the movie to play in WMP to stream it through TVersity to my XBox360. If it doesn't play in WMP then it doesn't play on my TV. I've tried the following subtitle formats: sub, smi, srt. The movie files are avi's. I'm running WinXP MCE with all windows updates using the newest Klite Mega codec pack. I'm displaying the subtitles with DirectVobSub.

    Thanks
    Brent

You might have better luck in the Xbox 360 section, since this seems to be more directly related to the system.

That said, I've only worked with the PS3, but I haven't ever tried putting videos with soft-encoded subs onto its hard drive.

Why does it need to be playable in WMP11? If TVersity can stream it, shouldn't you be able to just stream using that?

And this might be dumb, but are the subs and videos the same name? ("video.avi" and "video.sub/srt/etc.") Do they even HAVE to be the same name?

...but yeah, I know next to nothing about the 360, its multimedia playback, and streaming. Wish I could help you more.

Hey! The only reason I mentioned the xbox is to let everyone know why I needed to use WMP11. The issue is not xbox related, its a problem with my computer not playing certain movie files when they have subtitles with them.

The files have to be playable in WMP11 because TVersity uses my computer, specifically WMP, to reencode the files in real time to my xbox. If the files don't play on my computer, then they won't play on my xbox.

yes, all the movie and subtitle files are the exact same name in the same folder.

The only issue I am trying to work out is why my computer will play some movies with subtitles and won't play other movies with subtitles. When I load a problem movie with a subtitle, WMP just acts as if its stopped. WMP never shows a running or total time that usually shows up after a movie starts playing and the screen just stays black.

    Thanks!

Huh... it MIGHT be a codec issue. D'you have the latest versions of K-Lite and Xvid and DivX and all that good stuff?

Or it could be like me with my music. For some odd reason, WMP wouldn't play a specific music file. I moved it to a different folder, it played fine. I moved it back, it didn't play - it reads the file for a sec, no time/bar appears just like with your video, and then it moves onto the next song. Anyway, I ended up resetting the computer and it began to work like a charm again.

Maybe you could try turning off your computer. I dunno. Now I'm just throwing stuff out there.
