I recently purchased a benq drive. it shows up in dvd fab platinum as:
E:\[BENQ DVD LS DW1655 BCGB (Usb)]

its in a galaxy metal gear 5.25" enclosure found on gmg.com
    http://www.galaxymetalgear.com/Products/5202.html

The problem is it shows up in My Computer as a cd drive. I can use the burner but it wont burn DL+R, +R, or -R discs faster than 2.4x and it seems to have trouble using booktyping in dvd fab. I have yet to burn a dvd using booktyping and have either a successful burn or a disc that can be played back. I suspect my problems could be related to the enclosure. I had problems installing it and it does not function properly.

Should I try another enclosure or could my problem be with firmware?I am using QSuite v2.1 and my operating system is windows xp home edition with service pack 2 update.

USB2.0 enclosures are excellent for DVD work, i've been using a few enclosures for a few years now; it's imperative that you have them setup correctly, ie they're good to no-one if they're only running at USB1.1 speeds (for example)

I have the exact drive in the exact same closure as you have:

it has a Prolific chip set to connect to the computer and I found that the USB works great...... it's the firewire connection that doesn't work for me. why I don't know but my drive burns everything in site! I also have the latest firmware: BCIB
update your firmware. I booktyped the drive to recognize all the +R disks as DVD-ROMs so it's more compatible players. does a great job. Also use good, quality media. I only use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim and I have almost 100% success rate after THOUSANDS of burns! I use my burner almost every day and it's a winner! good luck with yours.

Also Windows has a habit of showing the drive as a CD drive when you put in a CD! It all depends on what media you use. this is nothing to worry about. It's a windows bug. Supposedly Vista has corrected this.

i updated the drive and it performs better. i have only been using verbatim dl disks. i recently ordered some ritek dl. i prefer the verbatims to the riteks though they are a bit pricey. can dl disks be booktyped? these are the ones i am having trouble with. i use a lot of dl disks because i don't compress anything that shows up below 90% on dvdfab. thanks for the help guys.

all PLUS (+)R media can be booktyped! all you are doing is telling your drive that the +R(W) or +R DLs are DVD-ROMs. the drive is set once you set the Booktyping. use your QSuite or you can use DVDDecrypter, ImgBurn, or DVDInfo Pro to set your drive's booktyping. And rememeber..... only the + media can be booktyped to DVD-ROMs! So every time you record..... you media will be booktyped to DVD-ROM (which will fool players that it's playing a store bought disk!).

    Read this about Booktyping:

Post back to this thread your experience with the ritek dls. I stopped using them due to issues with the layer break and am curious if they have improved them. I have the same drive but as an internal.

As IHoe explained, all +R media can be booktyped as long as your drive has that capability.

You will want to double check your booktype setting if you unplug your burner from your computer. I'm finding my external (a Lite-On) drops the booktype setting and returns to default setting for some odd reason.

the 1655 will keep it's booktyping even when you turn off the power to the external drive.... I know...... I set mine once and that's it! the BenQ 1655 is a great drive! I wish BenQ wouldn't have stopped making their burners.....they make great burners!

So I guess I need to find an external enclosure and make my Benq 1655 portable!

IHoe - i do indeed, but all my other enclosures are all for hard drives...

for instance for 3.5" hard drives, i have a couple of these, they're very nice -

and a couple of these plain ones (but not SATA ones, just ATA ones, they look the same) -

and a few 2.5" ones with nice blue lights and 80gb hard drives, they get the most use, i use those like USB sticks :)
