There are two possibilities, you either have iTunes set to consolidate your library, or your music files weren't in an iPod compatable format [such as WMA] so iTunes converted all of them to AAC. If iTunes had to convert all of your music files [you would have noticed it takes a pretty long time] the only real solution is to delete the folder your files were in originally. If your music was originally in MP3 or AAC format then you can open up your prefrences in iTunes and go to the 'Advanced' tab. Under General there will be a check off thing that says 'Copy Files To iTunes Music Folder when adding to library' So make sure that is unchecked. And if you want your 20 gigs of space back find the folder named iTunes Music Folder and delete it. Just make sure you still have a copy of all of your music!
