I have a problem with splitting a file in VirtualDub. I am referring to the splitting method shown in this tutorial: http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/cut_avi_with_virtualdub.cfm My total filesize is 1441660 KB (1.37 GB). So if I use VirtualDub to split this file into Two equal parts (as shown in the tut.), I should get two files of more or less 720830 KB (704 MB). But instead, one is of about 656 MB in size and the other file is about 738 MB. The 656 MB file is no problem, but there is no way that I know of, in which you can burn a 738 MB file into one CD (except overburning, which by the way, I don't want to risk). I want to fit this video file into not more than 2 CDs. Total no. of frames in the video file is 195682. So that divided by two = 97841. But in VirtualDub, on the slider (or whatever it is called), that frame number doesn't appear. The closest variants are 97740 and 97942. So I selected 97942. Anyway, this should not be a problem, according to the statement in the tutorial that says : don't get too paranoid about this -- anything nearby should be ok'. Additional Info: Video Codec: XviD ver(1.1.0-30122005) Video Resolution: 640 x 360 Audio Format: AC3 VirtualDub Version: 1.6.15 Note: This is the first time I am encoding a DVD to XViD format using this tutorial- http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/copy_dvd_to_xvid.cfm Acc to this tut, I used DVD2AVI to make the example.d2v file. After that, when I used VFAPI Converter 1.05 EN to make the VFAPI AVI file, it created an EMPTY (0 byte) avi file. To get around this problem, I used DGIndex ver(1.1.0) to make the example.d2v file, and then when I used the VFAPI Converter on this file, it created a VFAPI AVI file of an actual size (may be less than 100 MB, i don't remember correctly). This is the file that I finally used, not the zero byte file. But anyway, I don't know why this matters, as the video got successfully encoded to XViD, and the problem is only with splitting. What's with the double post? http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360334 The audio will be CBR, so half time wise will be half size wise. The video is probably VBR, so half time wise may not be half size wise. Better to split by size, not length if that is what you care about.
Sorry about the double post, celtic_d. I did'nt know where exactly to post this topic. What is CBR and VBR? Constant and Variable Bitrate? How do I split it by size? Please explain. I have already used programs like Advanced AVI Splitter, which clearly gave an option of splitting into 'x' no of parts, where 'x' is a number that I can choose. I chose 2, obviously, but still had the same problem. EDIT: The sizes of the 2 files was slightly diferent this time, but the difference between them was still about 45 MB.
Problem solved! I used AVI Chop, which came in the package of 'ACE Mega Codecs Pack'. The main problem in the other file splitting programs was that it split the according to the length (the total running time of the video), but AVI Chop splits the file according to the size. ACE Mega codecs pack is available from http://www.fw.hu/galgonet/ and http://ace.subpage.net/ I don't know if AVI Chop is available sepatarely anywhere.
