Have you tryed to re-install its operating system. You can download it at TI's website.

The TI-86 is a seriously out-dated calculator. Invest in a TI-84 or 84 Plus or even a TI- 89 if your budget allows

You can download TI-Connect free at TI's web site. You can also download the operating system you need for free. I am assuming that you have a Silverlink cable to connect your calculator to your computer. Simply drag and drop the operating system on TI Device Explorer once you have installed TI Connect. (DO NOT INSTALL TI-CONNECT WITH YOUR CALCULATOR HOOKED TO YOUR COMPUTER)

If you cannot connect your calculator to a computer another TI-83 can be used. Connect the two calculators together. Turn them on and press [2ND] and then [LINK]. On one calculator select "send" and then select "SENDOS" . On the second calculator select "Recieve" and press enter. Now press enter on the first calculator. The process should take less than 10 minutes, depending on the condition of the recieving calculator.
