problem with windows XP

i am having a problem with my thumbnails for video files such as avi mpeg and divx. The thumbnails will not show the preview of the movie it just shows the default image of the software used to view the file. How can i fix this small issue

 

What program is default for opening the files, is it VLC by any chance?

 

yes it is vlc but also the files that i have set to open with nero showtime also show the nero showtime default thumbnail

 

If I remember rightly, even when I set VLC as the default player for these files, I still got the thumbnail, I get the traffic cone if the file is incomplete (for example, a download still in progress)

 

ok i used to get the thumbnail pics before i reformatted and installed vlc before i installed windows media player. is there a setting in the control panel or administrative tools that i can fix or something in the registry that i can do to get my thumbnails back
