This is my first post. I have a Gateway 2.53mhz Pent. 4, 256 RD Ram. A HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4020B (Multi Drive - does DVD-R,-RW, RAM). I have tried to make copies Minority Report, Any Given Sunday, and Resident Evil (1 disk). My problem has been the same regardless of the version of DVD-x-Copy I have used (Versions 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3) They were recorded using Memorex DVD-R's, which I believe to be a decent brand (or am I mistaken?). My problem is after getting a perfect copy for nearly the entire disk, the last several chapters skip terribly to the point that they cannot be read. I assume this is either the media I am using or that it is DVD-x Copy. I did try Spiderman using Imation DVD-R's and it worked other than the fact once the last chapter before split finished, it started over from the beginning. This was with an earlier version of DVD-x Copy (think it was version 1.1). I have yet to make a perfect version of a movie yet and would like to hear some brand names of media that has worked for others. Another thing I would like to know, is there any way I could strip down a video and also be able to keep 5.1 audio tracks and still have it fit to only one disk? I love my digital surround system and think that is one of the best benefits of having things on dvd...if anyone knows...please I will appreciate the time you take to respond to this. Thank You
Hi consul, this is my first post also. I am using DVDXCopy with my computer...1.2 athlon, 1gb pc133, Pioneer DVR-104. I am pretty new to doing this but I will give you my experience. I bought the "true 2x" dvd-r from allmediaoutlet and have made several successful backups. The only problem I had was with an old movie I had, Red Dawn, and the last couple of chapters skip like you describe. But this is the only time it has happened after about 8 backups so far. I may try the Ritek 2x next time, from what I have read that seems to be a pretty good brand.
I have used Xcopy to backup several movies (15?)on both Verbatim and Memorex discs. I haven't noticed any problems so far. However, I have had problems with some original discs in my Tosiba player (e.g. Windtalkers). It skipped then hung, especially near the end of the first disc. I assume it was a bad disc (it happens). Try playing your Xcopies on your PC (WinDVD,etc.) to see if they work properly. Or if you have a second DVD player, try them on it. Maybe it's your player, not your copies. I have had one movie that had trouble on my Tosiba player but worked fine on my Sony. Some players, I hear, are sensitive to media type (-R or +R) and media brand (Verbatim, etc.). Sony, the maker of my burner, has a web page that suggest which media brands WILL work with it's burner. Try the web site for your burner to see if they have a similar suggestions. Also, make sure you have the lastest Xcopy drivers installed.
I believe this site and vcd help are everbuilding a compatability list. I buy my dvd-r's at allmediaoutlet and use the cheapest they have. About a dozen discs so far and not a bad one yet, I also use the sony dru-500a recorder. Consul44, I would play the dvd that skips on your computer, if there are no problems there then I would assume a compatability problem, either with media or your standalone player.
The outside of the disc (where the end of the film is) has less time in front of the laser as the pits pass the laser quicker. So if the standalone is a bit fussy it won't pick up the end of the film properly. If you use better media it should fix the problem, or get a better standalone. My old DVD player had this problem with cheap discs, my new one will play all the discs the old one wouldn't. I took the 'bad' discs to the HiFi shop and had them play the last two chapters to see if it worked.
point me in the right direction.... Some burns good and some not so good. Skipping around the hour mark or so. Not home player. nothing running in background. Even one movie started with the credits. Another said it could fit on one disc if blah blah, and then when to burn and it said it was too big..... getting ready to go postal with this box. When I first started, everything ran great. 20 good movies later and this starts. I have double checked the list of good burns and the ones I am trying are listed for my region and equipment. I have read a few articles about others with the skipping prob, but nothing about a fix or add on. Ohh and I have not made any changes on my puter or added any other software. Changed between the alt and the recommended option for the burn, etc.
It's probably a media problem. Even if you are using the same media the company may be using differrent stock. That or the burner or player has a dirty lens.
