I am having difficulties with a pc I cobbled together from a few old ones I was upgrading.

When the computer starts it doesn't load the desktop, that is until you Ctrl-Alt-Delete check the task mnager and realise that the explorer.exe is registering 99 on CPU usage.

If you end this process the desktop will lod up ok, but what is causing this? I have reinstalled WIN XP PRO and 'fixed' this particular instalation but no joy.

    HELP!!!!!!!!!

What about trying a "Format" and Re-Install?

Been there! I have done quick and full formats. I have also tried scan disk and have no errors.

If you have no other software installed then it could be hardware.... Try memory? If you have 2 sticks in try them one at a time... CPU? If you have another then pop that in...

Checked memory and all appears ok there. I have only Win xp office and two games for the kids all of which work fine on other pc's. Would I need to flash the bios?
