Ok, I've got Absolute Sound Recorder, which does what I'm trying to do. But the only input options it offers is Sound Mapper and Mic. Neither of those record sound directly from the sound card, they both record mic. I'm running Windows Vista Home SP1 with all updated sound card drivers, etc. Also, its Realtek High Def. Audio sound. Anyone know why I can't record audio directly from the sound card? Thanks for the help!

Your query has me confused. Usually the mic jack is on the sound card. I plug the input device into the mic which is the analog sound input. The is the only configuration I have ever heard of. Either you are confused or your computer is very unusual.

Sorry about the confusion. Maybe I am confused. I don't know alot when it comes to audio stuff. But an example of what I'm trying to do is record a voice chat over icq. Hopefully that will clear up any confusion.

Yes, you are confused. I looked up icq so I am not an expert but it is already digital if it comes over your computer. Computers are in the digital world they 'translate' between analog and digital. You can't and should not use a sound card to translate to digital because it is digital!

My sugestion is to think through what you want to do and post a new clearly stated query on this forum. You have only related a piece of what you want to do. Are you trying to store your messages them play them back at a later time? Maybe there is software to do that. Just don't tell anyone you are P2Pering music! There are true solutions to that so you will not be listening to garbage. You will get better quality off youtube and that is still garbage.

This is probably not the place to post an icq conversion and storage query but someone may be able to point you in the right direction.

Well, I might be confused, but please don't assume I'm pirating music. If you want to know the truth of it, I'm in Afghanistan right now. I use ICQ to talk to family back home. What I'm trying to do is record the voice conversations for playback later. I had assumed, since the other parties voice was going through the sound card in order for me to hear it, I could record it. I guess that's how you would record streaming audio music, as well, but that's not what I'm trying to do. And the problem I'm having is I can't figure out either which software to use to complete this, or I can't figure out how to configure the software I have right. I'm not trying to make this hard to understand, but if it's coming out that way, I'm sorry, maybe you're just thinking too hard about it? No offense intended, seriously.

Now I know what you are trying to do. It is OK to be confused. The majority of daterdawn members are quite technical but I can tell you are not. That is OK too.

I will try to help you out. The solution will have nothing to do with the audio card. All you need to do is not destroy the voice files and be able to play them back.

I checked the ICQ web site. Apparently, it does save the messages in a history folder and they need to be deleted periodically. You need to figure out how to access and play your history files.

You can also try TotalRecorder. It acts as a 'virtual sondcard' and can intercept any audio stream in your PC. It's free to try, $20 to buy.

Mez> Hehe, way to insult without insulting ;) But ICQ does save message history, I knew that already. But it just save the text messages and a log of the voice chat. It doesn't save the voice chat itself. olyteddy has the right idea of what I'm talking about.

olyteddy> I'll check out TotalRecorder and see if that works. It might just be that Absolute Sound Recorder doesn't do what I want.

Thanks for the help, both of ya's. And just because I'm not technical about audio stuffs, doesn't mean I'm computer illiterate. ;)

drykul, my comments in no way were intended to insult. Insults are mostly in the ear of the listener. No one can know everything. I have two computer dopes for brothers. One lawyer the other a Dr. They both make 2-4 times what the computer tech makes. I would trade places with either in a heart beat.

Absolute Sound Recorder has a issue with Vista apparently, but I found SoundTap which seems to work. Thanks for the help. And Mez, don't get too technical, you might figure yourself out. ;) Later.
