Ok. I have copied almost all of my DVDs but here lately I have been having alot of problems.I have tried DVD Shrink,DVD Decrypter and DVD XCopy Express and Platinum. The movie gets about halfway through the reading process and freezes up with the 321 Studios programs and with Shrink it comes up with the error message.Something about encryption. And using Decrypter at 50% the read speed drops from whatever it's reading at to 0.0 and starts retrying over and over.Any ideas?I have a LiteOn 8X.I think it is the 812 model. Thanks!!!!

    Hi,

Sometimes running DVD43 while using Shrink will clear this up.

This sounds like you may have a dirty/scratched disc or a bad one from the factory. Try cleaning the disc.

    I'll second that....................seconded...LOL

If there is a bad area/mark/scratch on the disc then it has to slow the drive down in order to try and read the info - so in the case of dvd decrypter read speed at 0.0, this would indicate a blemish or 'bad spot' on the surface or indeed the substrate......

Something I have noticed aswell (using XP, with Dvd decrypter), if I encounter several of these types of discs (reading problems), then XP automatically changes my reader from DMA to PIO and permanently locks it there - and the only way I can change it, is by uninstalling the relevant IDE controller.
This will be evident if suddenly your general reading speeds lock to 2.4x................

So it is always recommended to visually check the disc first, and maybe clean if looking dirty.....

Hey BaaBaa, I have a question regarding the DMA setting. I have experienced the same issue as jborlace in this thread, but I have used at least 6 different disks, manufacturers and write capabilities from DVD-R to DVD+R to DVD+RW and they were Sony and Prodisc so far. The Prodisc is 8x DVD+R's and the Sonys were the others. I got about 3 movies burned over the course of this last week and all of a sudden, I couldn't get one to burn. I checked (seen from another thread) for the DMA setting in Device Panel (Windows XP) but there was NO resource tab and hence I couldn't find how to make sure it was set at DMA. Any suggestions?

Hey BaaBaa,my DVD Burner is now locked at 2.2 burn speeds. How do I fix that IDE controller that you mentioned.this isn't the first time that my burner has done this.I thought that the only way to fix this was to do a full restore(which I did last night ).

    To uninstall an IDE controller:

Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, expand this then right click either Primary or Secondary depending on which one your burner is on. Once you've right clicked the correct controller, go to Properties, select the Driver tab, then click Uninstall. Now reboot and let windows detect and reinstall the controller.

Now you can go through the same steps to go back and ensure that DMA is enabled.

It's not unkown to get a factory disc that has a bit of corrupt data on it which a player will just ignore but will trip up Shrink or Decrypter. If the disc is a new one, I'd exchange it :)

    jborlace - you mentioned
Are you talking burn speeds or read speeds - they are different?
But the DMA can have an affect on both operations.

Follow Nephilims process, and go into advanced settings - you should find the DMA settings there.
