i got a new ps2, the latest version SCPH-5001 (some people call it v10's i guess) and it says it plays DVD+-RW...so does that mean if i copy a dvd game i can play it on my ps2 without getting a modchip/slidecard?

    No, don't beleive the hype

You will need a mod chip and all probability.

Messiah 2 is the way to go - tried and tested

by the way use Alchol 120% to back up the games before playing them.

Try this first (DVD-R) advised then look into a mod chip

    good luck

and how much is a modchip like the "messiah 2" and how much would it cost to get it installed?
my uncle recently sent his to "chinatown" and he said he paid 120 bucks! i was like damn wtf? and he even said he cant play dvd movies now....what a joke. the SCPH5001 ps2's clearly says it plays dvd rws.....on the big blue box and in the manual....damn i cant wait till i get that damn dvd burner....

    Hi mgs937

Alcohol 120% is a software programme that removed the copyright from games, allowing you to back up your already owned games.

you'll find it on this website under software. (Well worth looking into).

Prices vary but i got mine bought and installed for £80

    UK prices.

If your in the UK i can put you onto the guy that done mine. He is first class and i recommend him 100%

Get a DVD dual burner, alchol 120%, a few tutorials and your away.

Remember, if you get the chip fitted and play backed up games, your laser will eventually need to be replaced.

But i can assure you, i've no regrets persoanlly and have played & Watched games /dvds from all over the world

    Good luck

How come the laser needs replacing after fitting a chip? More wear?
How much is a new one worth, how hard to fit?

    Hi s_francis

The original PS2 discuss have a higher reflection rate and so the laser doesn't have to work that hard.
But when lesser disks are used continously, the laser works far harder.

Laser replacement is around £50-80 pounds but it's wear is dependent on how often you play the games.

The money you save on games/DVDs can be used to replace the laser.

    hope this helps
