I think that the standalone players are higher quality and can give off a higher contrast ratio, but I could be wrong.

It could be like the HD-DVD drive for 360, its bad compared to standalone players.

THE PS3 IS ONE OF THE BETTER QUALITY BR PLAYERS. IT EVEN UPCONVERTS BETTER DVD MOVIES THROUGH HDMI. AND ITS FIRMWARE IS CONSTANTLY UPGRADING. PS3 COMES WITH HDMI 1.3. MOST BR/HD PLAYERS ONLY HAS THE HDMI 1.2.

any console dvd/bu-ray players are not good,i have seen the pansonic blu-ray, which is a good one up and running against the ps3 and there is a big difference, and the ps3 does not upscale either, just to clear up that point

I have the Panasonic DMP-BD10 and the PS3 and they're both good performers for BD playback.

BTW the PS3 can upscale or upconvert to 1080p beginning with the 1.8 update.

hm....ps3 is great for a game/blu-ray . it upscales all dvd movies better than most standalone. plus with all the firmware updates, it only will get better.

You sound as though you think that somehow makes standalones better than a PS3 when it actually proves the opposite. The hardware in the PS3 is better than any standalone, and upconversion of movies can certainly be improved through firmware updates (which can provide better upconverting codecs).

i guess you never updated an firmware for any of your electronics before. example: philips dvd player has a new firmware to make if read avi files and enables region free. isnt that making a hardware better? im just a newbie. just my 2 cents.

From what I've been reading, the newer standards produce a better quality sound than the old standards. The latest and greatest sound format is TrueHD, and only recently have receivers been released that support that sound standard. They will output 11.2 sound at a higher bitrate than the old standard.
