can i change from xp home to xp media center and keep everything on my internal hard drive safe from being erased or do i have to back up things i dont want erased? if anyone knows i'm dying to do this as soon as possible but i dont want to loose all my files.

Plus most of the things, if not all, you could add to your current system and get the same thing without WMC 05 installed. What exactly are you looking to do.
