Hi, I have an v1 xbox chipped with an xecuter 3. Evox dash but booting to xbmc.It has a 300 gb hdd and the front panel with lcd screen and bank selects. I have been slowly building it into a media centre as I've learnt about modding it over the last few years and just have some questions that have been niggling me as I'd like to expand it a bit. I have a router connected to the internet and another router for the xbox - I'd like to plug the xbox and NAS into one and then connect use the other router elsewhere in the house as an internet gateway. The xbox itself is strugling with pcsx emulation and I wondered if it was worth upgrading the ram? The fan speed is set to standard, the xbox is running alot - after seeing what people have said about cooling I'm worried what damage I might be doing to the bits inside? The panel on the front (sorry came with it and I dont know the name) has the lcd screen and 4 buttons next to a "protect" button. I remember something about bios select but could someone explain if I can put a reg xbox bios on one switch and keep my xecuter bios on another and switch between the two for xbox live (i will probably never go on xbox live but it was a thought) The front also has two usb slots but I dont know is I have to install drivers or do I just stick a memory stick and transfer files? Lastly, with regard to the NAS, I was looking at something like two of these...Possible NAS with 2x 500gb drives. Do you think they would suffice? My goal is to have the xbox under the tv, the router and hdd's on a shelf and store all my downloads and backups on them. Will xbmc be able to access and stream from there? I also have all my roms and emus, can they be played from there or do are they hardcoded to play from an xbox c or e drive. Sorry theres so many questions, I would very much appreciate any help with any of them. Thankfully I'm well past the noob stage and its just now I'm starting to think of how I can tweak it up a bit. One note, I was toying with the idea of getting a 360 but I just cant be bothered to get all new bits from the internet like roms etc, and Im unsure how good the modding is of them? Would it be easy to migrate to 360 or stick with what Im running and know best? Thanks in advance!!! Steve
WOW! That was a mouth full! Anyway, you can have 2 HDDs connected to the Xbox, but you can only boot one at a time. Which means rebooting everytime you need to access the other HDD for music or movies. Upgrading ram is not advisable. You can piggyback the origonal ram but I advise against de-soddering the factory ram and upgrading. The results are not worth the risk. And the Bios thing. Just switch off the mod chip, and the xbox will boot using factory BIOS.
Info for you.. Upgrading the ram can make a big difference to the performance of some of the emulators, the psx one not being one of them unfortunately. It's required for the mame emu to run properly and helps a lot with surreal64. The chips themselves are very hard to obtain, as they are samsung 16MB 60 leg monsters that take a hell of a lot more than beginners skill to install. I charge £70 for a ram upgrade, more than the cost of any console that you can emulate on an xbox..Just so you know.. After upgrading both mine I can honestly say it wasn't worth the effort and risk in the long run for the improvement it makes. To answer another question.. To boot the box with the xecuter3 disabled hold the power button for 3-4 seconds on boot and there you go.. The light in the switchbank will be red and the chip disabled. If you get error 5 you need to lock your harddrive. As for running/streaming from a nas you will need to be running a samba server, then xbmc will connect to it easily and allow streaming of music and video.. check out "myth tv" for more details on doing that. http://www.killefiz.de/k/machines/xbox-mythtv-frontend/ http://swik.net/MythTV+xbox both contain links to tutorials and downloads of the needed tools and software.
