You should be able to play burnt DVDs on a PS3 because once ripped and burned all forms of copy protections have been removed.

The PS3 is a good deal if you also would like to use the console for gaming but as just a Blu-Ray player it's not that economical. I purchased an OEM Lite-On for my PC for $119.00 and it seems to be doing well thus far. They even sent me two copies of PowerDVD Blu-Ray addition, but I didn't need them since I have a copy of PowerDVD Ultra 8.0. Since I have a very limited Blu-Ray collection I can't say how well the system will work over time, but for now I've been able to rip and play movies with it.

Yes you can play burnt dvd movies on a ps3, I have lots of ripped back-ups, never had a issue yet with them playing on a ps3.

I Think the ps3 is the best bargain for blu-ray player, the ps3 is much more than a blu-ray player and game console.

    Give this a read.
