i've tried plenty of firmwares and it just gets stuck on the loading screen. i think the problem might be that i'm using a micro sdhc card and the r4 isn't sdhc. is there any way to get it to work using a micro sdhc card?
If you have the original R4, it won't support SDHC cards. The best thing to do is to get an R4 SDHC flash card instead. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18313

I just updated my sons R4 to V 1.18 and now it is stuck on the loading screen, I just want the darn thing to work again, it worked just fine before I updated it. it has a 4g sdhc card.. is there a way to re-load the whole damn thing? why would they have you update these things if it screws them up?
Are you sure you have the right firmware, if you are using the 4GB card then it is not the original (also called revolution) http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/ This site lists all the firmwares, as you will see there are 10 with R4 in the name and some cards will not work on the latest firmwares. Try a few and see if you can resolve it
