Heard the reviews were good about this player, I take it though that your TV must have 1080p output for the player, is that true ?

The Toshiba XD-E500 will output 1080p, 1080i and 720p. It must output 720p or all sets smaller than 40 inches would not benefit. Also, now I am seeing plenty of "bargain" panels, especially plasma, 40 inches and larger that are 720p.

Think about it - if your set is 720p why would you want to scale up 480i to 1080p or 1080i so the HDTV would have to scale it back down to 720p for display?

I returned my XD-E500 because the "enhancements" were, to my eyes, over enhancements. This unit has a good scan converter and the improvements some see are probably due to having the latest design.

It works great without the enhancements turned on - on a par with my Sony DVP-NS71HP.
