Hi, i am abit of a novice when it comes to burning cd's etc and only just discovered that my new Samsung laptop has no floppy drive and so i need to save my uni work e.g. spreadhseets and word files etc onto CD...except for the fact when i do all my files turn into "REad-only" and won't let me change it from being such. After PC World suggested i buy some better quality CD-RWs i have tried again and still it will only save as read-only and the Samsung helpine proposed that the CD-RWs can not be used in this way - u can only save on to them once and then must delete it and re save it if u want to change the file on the CD. Surely this can't be right? I thought re-writable meant jsut this, otherwise isnt it a CD-R???
Ahhhh!! You are just a bit confused, that is all. ReWriteables are just as you think, re-writable. The trick is in HOW you choose to write to them. There are basically TWO methods: 1 - use as a CD-R that can be erased and used again. 2 - use the same way as a floppy. The first mode is the one you have used (without knowing it) The second mode requires the installation of Packet-Writing software (it probably came with your system), Nero provides In-CD, for example. Once the Packet-Writing is installed, you can insert a NEW re-writable disk and format it using the Packet-Writing software (same idea as formatting a floppy, it prepares it for file storage). Once it is formatted, it can be used the same as a floppy (read, write, delete, edit etc. etc.) Read the documentation that came with your system. have Fun...

Although i do have Nero 5 and have it installed i don't seem to have anythin called or resembling packet writing and i can't find any information on it in the manuals etc that came with my laptop. Do i need to go out and purchase this, it is the first time in all my searching for an answer that i have heard of packet writing! THankyou again x
Look on your original Nero CD for the In-CD installation (the nero CD may autostart & give you the option). Byeee...
ALso note that not all drives (properly) support packet burning and such Older drives may need special 'adaptor' applications to help interface
Hi, well i have looked on thr Nero cd and there is nothing about packet writing on there and also the drive is not an old one so im still stuck....any other ideas? I am supposed to be taking into up to PC World tomorrow for a guy to persuade me that u can not edit the files etc?!
Well, every Nero CD I have seen (Retail and OEM) has In-CD on it. Have you got an Original (not copied) Nero installation CD? Byeeee...
Hiya, sorry i can feel myself being annoyin now! Well the Nero 5 i have is just a CD and book that came with my laptop, not copied, i installed that and since u mentioned packet writing i looked for a mention of that and then for In-CD but i cant find it in the handbook or in when i type it in the help section of Nero. I did find that it there is a checked box for checking the cd is correct format if that means anything?? (Thanx again for ya help by the way)
Maybe the shop that sold you the system is being cheap, as every Nero I have looked at has had the option of In-CD. Here is Nero's website: http://www.nero.com/en/nero6.html notice that In-CD4 is part of the Nero package. don't let that guy fob you off with that story, as he is LYING!!! Take a printout from the In-CD4 webpage that SHOWS that he is lying, and INSIST on seeing someone in authority, and INSIST on HIM putting the situation right. Thanx for that again! I have Nero v5.5, not 6, does that make a difference? Im not sure where to look on it other than typing it in help but thanx i did notice on the nero website nero 6 included it. I will take a print out up to PC World tomorrow as u suggested and yes I am in the UK too. Do u think buyin Nero 6 would be an option to resolve this?
As far as I am aware, In-CD also came with all versions of Nero 5 in the UK, (Retail & OEM). All modern drives support packet-writing. Just about every burning software supplier today supports packet-writing: Nero - InCD RecordNow - DLA etc. Insist that they resolve the situation: you have a machine that has NO floppy support, and therefore no facility for removable editable support UNLESS packet-writing is provided to facilitate the funcionality. If there is no removable editable support on the machine, that means it is "not fit for the purpose" and as such is liable for rejection, as is your right under the law. The manager should give in at that point (you may even get a free copy of Nero 6). If needs be, tell the manager that you will be taking your complaint to Citizens Advice under the Consumer Act (only as a last resort). Do NOT let them retain the machine.
