As you know after ripping a music cd into MP3 format files (or any other codec for that matter) the result is a directory full of read only files.

Does anybdoy know of a - preferably free - utility which will remove the read only attribute from large trees of folders/files?

Open a command window and type
    attrib -r <drive:\path\filename> /S

where the path is the drive and directory of the files you want to change the read only attribute
