OK this is my problem... and it really really pisses me off... I got a trojan that changed my wallpaper. I scanned for viruses and spyware using AVG and Microsoft Antispyware. After getting rid of the trojan I still cant change my wallpaper and my pc still seems slower than normal. All the options and stuff under the desktop tab in properties are locked solid.

This is really irritating me and any suggestions would help alot, thanks. BTW the trojan was "trojan horse collected Z" or something like that.

Here's what you need to do, if you're running Win XP or XP Pro. Download the following programs/applications and install them on your system first.

    http://www.reviewlocator.com/download-12/ CCleaner (free)
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html Spybot - Search & Destroy (free)
    http://lavasoft.element5.com/default.shtml.en Ad-Aware SE Personal (free)
    http://www.reviewlocator.com/download-77/ Microsoft AntiSpyware (free)
    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 AVG Free Edition
    http://www.reviewlocator.com/download-61/ ZoneAlarm Free

http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm Sygate Personal Firewall (free - this is a good firewall if you don't have any)

And now when your'e ready to do some viruses, trojans, adwares, spywares, etc. hunting.

    1) go to START, RUN and type msconfig, click on BOOT.INI
    2) put a checkmark on /SAFEBOOT and OK, now restart your computer
    3) now scan your system as the above mentioned.
    4) once you're done, just go back to /SAFEBOOT and "unchecked", then restart your computer.

    I did what u said...

I dont think downloading 7 different antispyware and virus scanners is neccessary. Most of them conflicted with each other and it just creates an unorganized mess on your pc. Espessially during start-up.

No spyware was detected in safe-mode. I think I got rid of the actual trojan Im just having difficulty removing whatever is causing my desktop to have this hidius wallpaper. Its bright blue with a black rectangle that says "SPYWARE INFECTION" in red. If anyone has had this problem and fixed it please tell me how you did it. Thanks.

try downloading a completely separate program that can be used to control your wallpapers/themes...

i dont know of one but if you find one it might be able to change it...

or try right clicking a wallpaper and clicking set as desktop background...

I fixed the wallpaper problem but I still may have the virus because my pc has been running slow at times. I guess formating your comp would do it but its a lot of work... so try this and see if it fixes your problem.

    1. Go into regedit and follow this path "HKEY_CURRENT USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/POLICIES/SYSTEM

    2. You'll see a file C:\Windows\desktop.html... DELETE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. Now you should be home free... so change your wallpaper.

    4. To be sure the virus is gone run virus scan a few more times, perhaps in SAFE MODE.

In my case I think the virus has deleted or replaced some of my system files so virus scan wont help, but you may have a different virus so this may be all you need to do.

yamumma go to "start" --> "search" and type in "regedit". it's the first this that comes up. Then click on it and follow the path, its similar to windows explorer.

As for where I got the virus. I was on "www.astalavista.com" and this site runs like a search engine where u can search for illegal stuff and stuff. I cant recall which site I chose to go to and Im not willing to go back to that dirty whore site because the virus attacked without me downloading anything, my computer pretty much froze for 30 seconds and I wasnt smart enough at the time to manually restart my pc so then it was too late. God knows what the virus did to my comp, all I know is its not the same, explorer is using up 46,380K of my memory when it should normally be using less than 10000K.

When my computer unfroze after the 30 seconds I had spysherriff on my pc for some reason and my wallpaper was changed. My comp was running REALLY slow and when I finally uninstalled spysherriff and ran AVG virus scan it found the virus (Trojan Horse Collected Z). Overall, pretty gay situation and I hope its the last time it happens to me and it shouldnt happen to anyone, ppl who make these viruses should be found and thrown in jail.

    @ cropa...
i am not playing mod, but because for some reason there is no report offensive post button....

please do not reference to cracks or the such, as they are illegal it is against forum rules so if you do not mind please remove that paragraph and possibly write i was viewing [bold]a website[/bold] when it unexpectantly installed a virus on my computer, after this i noticed spy sherriff was installed...

    or something along those lines...
