Hello, I recently softmodded my xbox, and a then decided to upgrade my harddrive. So I ordered a 250gig and went through the process of installing the partitions, and locking the harddrive. Now for the first week or so the xbox and newly installed hard drive worked perfect. I was able to backup games, use applications, etc. Now lately the hard drive does not seem to be working correctly. When reading information, such as playing games, it will freeze or say the disk is dirty. Also it will not always boot to the dash, it will sometims give me an error screen saying to contact microsoft. I am not sure of the error code on the top right, because they are not always the same code.

I have xbox v1.1 and am using UnleashX.
Now I am using the stock harddrive, and it works fine. So is it possible that the xbox has ruined the harddrive, or was it defective. Also is there a way to fix the harddrive. I cleared all of the cache files on the xbox to see if that would work, and it did not. Also I have tried formatting it, and reinstalling the allocation table many times, with no luck.

My guess is you have a 7200RPM like most +120Gib HDD's which dislike the um... confind space of your XBOX™. My guess is that HDD is about to go thermal (i.e. HDD burnout),.

Something simular happend to me aswell. I replaced the Stock 5400RPM HDD with a 7200RPM 80Gib HDD in my XBOX™. I was only able to enjoy it for about ca. Three Months, before it went thermal! I have since replaced it with a 5400RPM 120Gib HDD and had no futher problems with the XBOX™.

If your going to want to / have to, use a 7200RPM HDD. You shouldn't hesitate to also get, and install a Xtender Casemod aswell. This will not only allow you the airspace to keep your 7200RPM HDD cool. But, you could also eventually add two more HDD's, (up to Three in total), in your XBOX™...

Ya it is a 7200, and I suspected that the heat was the problem. After it started having the errors I opened up the top case and left it off, which help a little bit but it ended up freezing again. I can not even format it through windows now, it has an error after the format process finishes.

Ya, thanks for the advice Ichijoe. I will check out the case mods, and try to send my hard drive back to get a replacement (hopefully). Or I will buy a 5400 harddrive.
